Kathy’s Arcadia Avenue Quilt
I have an incredible quilt to share with you today!!
The pattern is Arcadia Avenue by Sassafras Lane Designs. It’s a block of the month book, and can be found here: https://sassafras-lane.com/collections/quilt-books/products/arcadia-avenue
Kathy and the Tokay Stitch n’ Quilt Guild made it together. It’s such an incredible quilt! I’m amazed so many different ladies can sew the blocks and they come together so beautifully.
Kathy shared a picture with me of one of these quilts that she saw at a quilt show. I could quite see all the details in the blocks, but loved the petals in the background. Kathy gave me creative freedom for the custom quilting.
I hope you can see the beautiful textures I created in each of the blocks. Lots of straight lines and curves.
I used three Omni thread colors throughout. The background thread is New England Blue, and I also used Natural White in the blocks with the exception of black thread in all the black fabrics. I love Superior Threads Omni thread. Kathy requested bamboo batting, which I think she’ll love! I get mine from Winline Textiles. Go to: https://www.winlinetextiles.com
When it comes to custom quilting quilts like these I try to enhance the shapes to help the modern blocks shine. I don’t think feathers would be a good choice, instead a variety of different lines or curves.
Adding some soft swirls added depth and a fun detail in the block above.
The custom quilting on the block above almost creates motion with the pattern and textures. The center of the block had a bulky seam, so I quilted a circle.
I used my 9” Circle2 ruler, which is the outside circle on the ruler below, for all the petals in the blue background. Throughout the rest of the quilt I used the 3”, 4”, and 5” Circle2 rulers. My Circle2 rulers are available in my shop, go to: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop
My Circle2 rulers are made from 1/4” high quality acrylic here in the USA. The circles come in a set of 6, and each ruler has two sizes of circles, like the 3”/9” above. The 3” circle is inside the ruler and the 9” is outside. The circles range in size from 2” up to 13”. I designed them with the hopping foot in mind which adds a quarter of an inch from the needle to the outside of the hopping foot. So a 3” circle quilted using my 3” circle2 ruler ends up being 3”, not 3.5”. They are available in my shop, go to: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop
These are a couple of my favorite blocks! I love everything about them.
And another favorite!
I used a 12” Edge ruler from Linda at The Quilted Pineapple to quilt all the lines. Her edge rulers are my favorite straight rulers. Go to: https://www.thequiltedpineapple.com/shop/
