Two by Four Quilt for Annette
We recently found out that my aunt Annette has ovarian cancer, which is heartbreaking. She has the best attitude and is fighting hard!! My mom and I worked quickly to make this happy quilt to remind her she’s loved and to keep her warm during her treatments. It was wonderful timing whrn we finished it just in time to have one of my aunts deliver it in person when she flew into to be with Annette during one of her treatments.
The pattern is called Two by Four quilt, which is a FREE tutorial by Ashley from Film in the Fridge. Click here: https://filminthefridge.com/2016/04/07/two-by-four-a-quilt-block-tutorial/
We actually used charm packs from the original Cotton + Steel basics that I got at quilt market in SLC in 2016 (if I remember right). We cut them in half and then sewed them to a low volume print from Moda’s “modern background paper even more” line. Because we used charm squares, our blocks were a little different in size…but not much.
I recently tried Superior Threads MasterPiece thread to sew this quilt together, and I love it!! For years I’ve been using their Omni thread, because other threads would either break on my machine or weren’t the best quality. I love love love the MasterPiece! You should give them a try!! https://www.superiorthreads.com/masterpiece-186-blanc-cone/p/124-02-186?show=

I made a quick reel while I was sewing the quilt together with my mom. Check it out here: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DHNZiCvNV__/?igsh=bzY4NDB0d2NzNDl1
While I was sewing the quilt together, I was thinking about Molly’s Skating panto design, which I thought would look darling on this quilt and add a little extra sparkle because of the 4 pointed star. It quilted out beautifully!! You can find it here: https://lovely-threads-quilts.myshopify.com/collections/geometric/products/skating I quilted it at a 2.5” height. I also shared a reel of me quilting out this panto on this quilt, check it out here: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DHcHrxrRwdg/?igsh=bGcxbHJ0OGNrdHR3
I used Natural White Omni thread from Superior Threads to quilt it. It’s one of my go to neutrals. Go to: https://www.superiorthreads.com/omni-3002-natural-white/p/134-02-3002
We found out after we chose the binding color, that teal is the color for ovarian cancer. We hope this bright and happy quilt cheers Annette up on the days she doesn’t feel the best!
I want to make another one…this is such a fun quilt to piece!
I used 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline Textiles. My favorite 8020 batting!!
I prefer the vertical look of the rectangles, I know that Ashley’s tutorial shows the rectangles horizontal in the pattern. Do whichever suits your liking.

This is why I LOVE a solid minky backing. The texture is sooo good!! This is actually the Moda minky, my mom got a bolt for her fabric shop. It is just as soft and wonderful as the Shannon Fabrics minky.
Thanks for stopping by!! Happy quilting! Leisha 💕
