Laurie’s Block Exchange Quilt
Excited to share with you this stunning quilt that I custom quilted for Laurie mid December. It’s so beautiful!!!
Laurie won these two different blocks from her guild and decided to put them together into one quilt. She has a quilty friend who helped her figure out how to make it happen.
Members of her guild decide whether or not they want to submit a block or two, and then everyone who made a block has a chance to win all of the blocks. Laurie was the lucky winner twice!! This is something that I think they do fairly often, and she’s had both of these sets of blocks for a while, and I think it’s amazing how well the blocks work together.
A drew out the blocks on graph paper to figure out how I wanted to custom quilt each of these blocks. I love doing ruler work when I custom quilt, and creating beautiful shapes that often times create secondary designs. As you can see in these blocks.
For the blocks I used my 2”, 3”, 5”, and 9” Circle2 rulers, which are available in my shop. Go to: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop • I created the Circle2 rulers with the hopping foot in mind so when you quilt out a 3” circle you are going to get a 3” circle not a 3 1/2” circle, which I’ve noticed happens with other longarm circle rulers. They are made from a 1/4” high-quality acrylic in America.
I also used a –20– ruler from Linda at The Quilted Pineapple for the arcs in the inner border and her edge ruler for the lines throughout the quilt. Go to: https://www.thequiltedpineapple.com/shop/
I just love this quilty texture!!! It’s sooo good!
I don’t think custom quilting always needs to be dense. Some of my favorite designs I’ve created over the years are like what I’ve done on this quilt. Beautiful soft curves and straight lines that creates a beautiful classic look.
You can see some of the secondary designs in both the picture above and below.
In the block pictured below, I used my 5” Circle2 ruler in the rectangles and my 2” Circle2 ruler for the arcs around the blocks and the center of the 9 patch as well as the orange peel petals in the 9 patch.
I used a 3” Circle2 ruler for the curves around the outside of the block and the 2” Circle2 ruler once again for the petals in the half square triangle blocks.
My Circle2 rulers are available as a set of 6 in my shop. The circles range in size from 2”-13”. Go to: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop
I used Cream Omni thread from Superior Threads. Don’t forget to use my non-affiliate code ASTLEISHA at checkout for your next order and you’ll get 15% off. Go to: https://www.superiorthreads.com/omni-3004-cream-neutral/p/134-02-3004?show=Cones also, as you can see the cream color of thread blends beautifully!!
As you can see I did my swirly feather freehand design to frame the quilt nicely. I teach my Swirly Feather and 9 other freehand designs in my Quilting It Freemotion video course, which is available on my website. Go to: https://www.quiltingit.com/quilting-it-freemotion-course • I teach one freemotion quilting design per video, so you can pick and choose which design you would like to learn.
I used my 9” Circle2 ruler to quilt the curves for shorter sashing between the blocks. It’s my favorite design to quilt in sashing.
I love how all of these blocks look together!
Laurie is planning on hanging this on her wall, which is perfect because it’s a smaller throw size.
I used my favorite 8020 batting from Winline Textiles, which is available here: https://www.winlinetextiles.com/blended-battings-winline-comfort-blend-s/127.htm
My biggest goal with custom quilting is to create an overall cohesive look with the variety of different designs that I do, and I really love how everything came together on this quilt.
If you’re interested in having me custom quilt for you send me an email with the picture of your quilt and we will talk about the quilting or check out my edge to edge quilting calendar to schedule a day or two. Go to: https://calendly.com/quiltingit/edgetoedge
