Bonnie’s Sampler Quilt

Custom quilting sampler quilts is so fun for me! Being able to create different quilty textures in each of the blocks and repeating the design elements in different ways throughout is my goal, like I did on Bonnie’s sample quilt.

I love the overall quilty texture and look of the quilt. The design in the sashing frames the blocks so nicely and I love the add a touch of the swirly feather border.

I used four of my favorite Circle2 rulers, the 2”, 3”, 4”, and 5” throughout the quilt in different places.

My Circle2 machine quilting circle rulers are available in my shop at https://www.quiltingit.com/shop • they are made from a 1/4” high-quality acrylic in the USA. The circles range in size from 2” up to 13”, with two sizes of circles per ruler like the 2”/8” pictured below. They come in clear and green clear.

I used Cream Omni thread from Superior Threads. Don’t forget to use my non-affiliate code ASTLEISHA at checkout for 15% off your order. Go to: https://www.superiorthreads.com/omni-3004-cream-neutral/p/134-02-3004?show=Cones

Check out the background fabric color in both of these pictures. They were taken at the same time in the same room with the same light and with the same phone. I’m still sharing them both because I want to have a place to come to if I have a block that I need to custom quilt and I need a variety of different ideas.

You’ll see in all these blocks a variety of different line designs, lots of orange peel petals, and even some swirls and feathers.

I used an Edge ruler from Linda at The Quilted Pineapple to quilt all the lines. https://www.thequiltedpineapple.com/shop/ Linda’s Edge rulers are my favorite straight rollers to quilt with!

Bonnie provided her own batting, it feels similar to the 8020 that I use often for client quilts.

I love the swirl arc design that I quilted in the blue fabrics in the block below. It might be one of my most favorite freehand designs that I quilted on this whole quilt. I definitely have to stop and think for a moment which direction I’m going as I work my way around the block so that I don’t quilt the swirl on the wrong side of the block.

When there are odd shapes in the background pieces on the block, sometimes it can be tricky to figure out what to do. I quilted a simple orange peel petal, then filled it with a couple of feathers, and the filled up the rest of the space with my Swirly Feathers, which I teach in my Quilting It Freemotion course. Love that teeny tiny orange peel!! My 2” Circle2 ruler for the win. Go to: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop

I also love the swirly pointed design that I freehand quilted in the corners on the background fabric in the block below. I’ve never done that specific design before, so I’m going to need to do that again!

Check out that quilty texture one more time!

I posted a few videos when I quilted this quilt back at the beginning of December when I quilted this on my instagram. Here is the first: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DR8HP58D50J/?igsh=bWhnYnl5aXk1MDFs and my YouTube channel https://youtube.com/@quiltingit

I love what I did in these corner blocks, and it’s simply lines with a 1/2” spacing. Click here to watch a video I shared about quilting corner blocks correctly so the points don’t get cut off. https://www.instagram.com/reel/DSIgDuUEaVe/?igsh=MXd1bWdhcXJwbTd2cg==

Check out that Minky texture!

I don’t love doing dense custom quilting on quilts that have minky on the back, because it won’t be as soft as it should be. This is just the right amount of quilting!

You’ll see in both the block above and below those beautiful swirly arc and swirly point designs that I freehanded and mentioned previously when I showed the front of each of the blocks. I love them both so much!

If you’re interested in having me quilts for you, check out my edge to edge quilting calendar at https://calendly.com/quiltingit/edgetoedge or email me at quiltingit@gmail.com with a picture of your quilt for custom quilting. Thanks for stopping by.

Happy quilting! Leisha 💕
