Kathy’s “Who’s in My Garden” Quilt

Hello,

This incredible quilt was on my machine back in February, and with a little bit of time this afternoon I want to tell you about it.

Kathy created this design herself and called it “Who’s in My Garden”. Which, if you notice all the little creatures…you’ll see who visits her garden. There is no pattern for this. She had the center panel for awhile and possibly the floral border fabric, which she designed the whole quilt around. There are 7 pieced borders on this quilt.

The delicate floral arrangement in the center is so beautiful and classy, and I didn’t want to take away from that with the quilting so I cross hatched it with a long Edge ruler from Linda at the Quilted Pineapple.

I quilted my freehand Overlapping Circles design in the corners behind the birds. If you’re interested in having me teach you how to quilt freemotion from the comfort of your own home, check out my Quilting It Freemotion course.

Then I just kept quilting and trying to highlight each border, repeating some of the designs to create cohesion throughout the quilt.

If you’re interested…Check out the quilting details for the first couple of borders in this instagram video. I used my 4” Circle2 ruler for curves behind the outside scalloped blue border. My Circle2 rulers are available in my shop, in a set of 6 ranging from 2” up to 13”…with two circles per ruler. Check them out!!!

I share the rest of the border quilting designs in this video. I used my 5” Circle2 ruler for the petals in the flying geese blocks. More freehand Overlapping Circles and lots and lots of lines.

I used Hobbs wool batting and natural white Omni thread from Superior Threads.

This quilt is amazing, and it was fun to create so much beautiful quilty texture!!

• Madi’s My Happy Place Mini Quilt •

Hi Friend,

I hope you’re back into your sewing groove, I’m trying to get there and it’s exciting!! I have three quilts I’m working on, and hoping to finish this year.

I quilted this fun My Happy Place mini quilt for Madi Hastings from Laser Cut Quilts last year, and now I can finally share it.

So fun, right?!?!!!!

As you can see from the pictures, each strip has a different quilting design in it. Starting from the left a 45° pinstripe, my freehand grassy texture, 1/2” grid, my freehand overlapping circles, vertical pinstripes, wood grain, 45° half inch lines, next my freehand crackle, horizontal pinstripe, mixed freehand pebbles and swirls, my overlapping lines, and finishing off with a stipple.

I quilted the machine down with a straight stitch along the edge, which I don’t love to do. Doing an appliqué stitch of your choice before taking it to your quilter is the best option.

These are the colors I used…yes I changed the thread for each strip of fabric. Madi didn’t request it, but knowing it was going into a magazine, I wanted to give her my best work. As you can see there are a variety of colors and brands of thread.

I used a scrap of 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline Textiles, which is out of Utah.

Such fun texture!! Loved quilting this.

Sometime in the future Madi will be able to sell this in a kit with the machine and letters laser cut, until then all the details are in Quiltmaker.

Laurie’s Grandbaby Quilt

Hello there,

I have a quick and super cute quilt to share with you today!! Laurie made this for her first granddaughter!! I’m so excited for her! I’ve known Laurie for years and used to babysit her kids, so it’s fun for me to see her kids having kids of their own.

The pattern is called Layer Cake Loop, which is a free pattern from the Fat Quarter Shop.

Laurie used the super cute fabrics by Maureen McCormick called Flower Power…So cute, huh?!?!

I used the sweet panto from my dear friend Shelly’s mum shop called Sprig! I quilts out beautifully and it creates such beautiful texture.

I used my favorite 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline Textiles and Natural White Omni thread from Superior Threads.

And, she chose white minky for the backing!!

Kathy’s Quilts

Hello there,

I have a few cute quilts to show you!! Kathy made all three of these quilts, so I’m going to share them all in this post.

First up, this fun Love, Sweet Love quilt. It’s actually a boxed kit from Riley Blake. The fabrics are by Amber Kemp-Gerstel. So cute, right?!?!

I used my favorite 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline Textiles and natural white Omni thread from Superior Threads.

Kathy picked a design off of Urban Elememtz called Alpine Grande by Patricia Ritter, which I hadn’t seen before. I love how it turned out!!

How cute is that eyelash background fabric?!!!

This quilt is so happy…people reaching out for one another even in diversity…which we all need to do. Our differences can be celebrated and be something that brings us together.

Next up…

This quilt and the next are using the same Jenny Doan pattern that is in the Quilter’s 10” Precut Companion book. These fabrics are by Holly Taylor from her Sunflower Garden line.

I used my favorite 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline Textiles and a golden tan Omni thread from Superior Threads, that blends well with the fabrics.

Kathy requested Maureen’s Sunflowers from Urban Elememtz for the quilting design, which is another new design for me.

It’s fun to see sunflower fabrics again!! My sister and I had dresses in our early teen years that my mom made us, with almost identical sunflower fabric.

Next up…

This is the same pattern as the last quilt, just in different fabrics. These are from the Forest Fables fabric line by Paintbrush Studio Fabrics.

Kathy requested the Gummy Bears quilting design by Patricia Ritter, which is available at Urban Elememtz. Which is such a sweet design!!

I used a golden tan Omni thread from Superior Threads, and 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline Textiles.

The bears and stars dance across the quilt!!

Susan’s Goose Crossing Quilt

Hello there,

It’s been too long, and I have lots to catch up on…life has been crazy for me. Hopefully I can get back into a blogging groove, because I’ve quilted some pretty amazing quilts over the last several months.

Susan made this incredible Goose Crossings quilt, which is in the Autumn Bouquet book by Sharon Keightley. So amazing, huh?!?!

Susan used fabrics from several lines by Kim Diehl. Kim’s fabrics are so rich and stunning, and they go so beautifully together.

My quilting plan was to make the appliqué pop!! I quilted all the lines with an Edge ruler from Linda at The Quilted Pineapple and my Overlapping Circles freehand design in the background behind the flowers. The flowers themselves have no quilting in them. With how dense the quilting is, I don’t think it’s necessary. I quilted 1/2” squares in the very center of the background.

I used Almond Omni thread from Superior Threads, which is a perfect cream color.

The cornerstone blocks gave me the opportunity to quilt a simple grid design in the corners. Which I love with the petals.

To help the flying geese pop and create a beautiful frame around the flower blocks, I quilted simple petals using my 3” Circle2 ruler. (Pictured below) My Circle2 machine quilting circle rulers are available in my shop, and come in a set of six ranging in sizes from 2” to 13”. They are such a great tool to have when you’re freemotion quilting. There are two circles in each ruler, the one below is the 3”/9” ruler. 3” on the inside and 9” on the outside. They are made in America from high quality 1/4” acrylic.

The pop of red Susan put in the inner border is perfect. I quilted a freehand ribbon candy inside which ties everything together.

More Overlapping Circles, which I teach in my Quilting It Freemotion course, between the flowers and the inner border, with 3/4” lines from the flowers to the outside edge of the quilt.

I used two layers of batting. A 8020 cotton poly blend on the bottom from Winline Textiles, with a layer of Hobbs wool on top. I love that combo. I also love wool with bamboo. I recommend double batts on wallhangings or show quilts…or ones with lots and lots of dense quilting, it helps everything pop in the best way!

I wish you could all see this one in person. It’s incredible!!!

Ashley’s Star Sampler Quilt

I have a little down time while we are camping, so I thought I would share Ashley’s beautiful quilt!

Ashley made this gorgeous star sampler quilt with Camille from Thimble Blossoms Nantucket Summer fabric line. Isn’t it beautiful?!?! I’m making a Swoon 16 with this same fabric line, it’s such a beautiful line.

I used my favorite Natural White Omni thread from Superior Threads and a cotton poly blend batting the Ashley sent along with her quilt.

I wish you could each see this one in person, pictures never do a quilt justice.

Ashley chose my Wicker quilting design, and I am beyond thrilled with the outcome. Wicker is available in my shop, in several different digital formats.

Jennifer’s Summer Village quilt

Plus + Plus + Plus Quilts

I have a few fun plus quilts to share you! Years ago my sister made a plus quilt for her sister in-law’s baby. That cute little boy has two little brothers now, and they each needed their own. First up, the navy one.

I didn’t follow an official pattern, just a sketch and a bunch of measurements that my mom figured out back when my sister made the first quilt. Hopefully my mom will get around to making an official pattern someday. Until then, google plus quilts, and see what you find.

I got the fabrics from Sister and Quilters, my mom and aunt’s online fabric shop.

I used my Squared quilting design to quilt it, which is available in my shop. It’s such a versatile design.

I used Natural White Omni thread from Superior Threads and 8020 cotton poly comfort blend batting from Winline Textiles.

Of course we backed it with cozy off white solid minky! I love solid minky, the quilty texture shines.

Next up, the green version. Both the navy and green fabrics are striped, which I love!! The background prints for both quilts are also different white on white prints. My mom and aunt have a great selection!

Earlier this year we found out my brother’s brother-in-law was diagnosed with cancer. So we decided to make him a plus quilt to use during chemo treatments.

He’s a Utah State Aggie fan, so we thought it would be a fun touch to add the Aggie fabric. I found it at our local Bernina store Stylish Fabrics. Hopefully you can see the fun modern background papers background fabric that we pair with the solid navy.

My mom and I made this together, which was so fun. It was great to work on something together that we could give to him.

We used the same size of strips, we just made the quilt a lot bigger. I don’t remember the size, but it’s a large throw. The first two quilts are toddler sized.

I used a natural white Omni thread from Superior Threads and my favorite 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline Textiles.

I decided to use my new Tangled quilting design, which is available in my shop. It is quilted vertically on the quilt to fit the 90” wide minky backing. I pin minky onto my canvases on the two ends that are cut, because it stretches a lot. Which sometimes means I have to baste the quilt onto the minky lengthwise instead of the width. Which I did in this case. So, the design quilted out horizontal as pictured, but because the quilt was pinned on lengthwise the design looks like it was quilted vertically onto the quilt when I take it off the canvases. It’s an easy way to change the direction of a quilting design…haha!!

Thankfully our local Bernina store has a huge selection of minky colors. I found a grey that is so close to the grey in the Aggie fabric.

Now, we pray and pray for Mike and are so grateful for the miracles they’ve already seen.

Sandy’s Baby Buffalo Plaid

Are you looking for a simple baby quilt??? This is our go to quilt for baby boys…in fact this is for one of my cousin’s baby boy.

My mom cut the strips at 4” for some strip piecing. It makes a simple quilt like this, even more simple. If that’s possible. The fabrics were from her online fabric shop Sisters and Quilters.

I used my favorite Natural White Omni thread from Superior Threads and 8020 comfort blend batting from Winline Textiles.

I was going to use my Squared design initially, but then decided last minute to use my new Point quilting design, and it turned out so great!!! Both designs are available in my shop.

My cousin…the dad of this cute baby boy…love going up in the mountains, and I think he’ll enjoy the quilty texture.

Aren’t those fabrics so fun?!?! They are perfect for creating the buffalo plaid look.

Debbie’s Grand Union Quilt

Hi There,

I’m excited to share this beautiful patriotic quilt with you!! This one was made by Marilyn and Debbie. Pictures don’t do this quilt any justice!

Its called Grand Union by Minick and Simpson. It’s such a beautiful pattern!!! If I were to make another patriotic quilt, it would be this one!!

I used my favorite Natural White Omni thread from Superior Threads…yes, this is my go to thread. It goes with so many quilts and blends beautifully. I also used my favorite 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline Textiles.

I gave Debbie a few options and she chose Rock ‘n Roll Starz Petite by Patricia Ritter, which looks so great on every part of the quilt but I love it on the stripes the most!!! It’s available at Urban Elementz.

Debbie’s Star Struck Quilt

Isn’t this a stunning quilt?!?!!! Debbie and her mom Marilyn have been working on several quilts lately, and this is one of them. Marilyn is in her 90’s, which has me hoping I’m sewing into my 90’s too.

This one came in a kit called Star Struck, which is no longer available. The pattern had three different layouts in it, and it’s called Floating Star by Stitch and Snip.

I used my favorite Natural White Omni thread from Superior Threads…which I think blends beautifully over all the dark saturated fabrics, and 8020 cotton poly comfort blend batting from Winline Textiles.

Debbie chose Patricia Ritter and my Horizon quilting design, which added some beautiful texture!! Horizon is available at Urban Elementz. We designed this design years ago, and I’m finally using it. It stitched out beautifully!!

The variety of batik fabrics together is so stunning!!

Denice’s Rainbow Bargello Quilt

Have I got a fun quilt to share with you today!!! Mesmerizing, right?!?!

It’s called the Rainbow Bargello quilt. When I did a little google search several layout options came up, so many I couldn’t quite pin point which one it is. If you’re interested in making one, do a search and see which one you prefer.

I used a purple thread, which blended great on the backing and was a fun pop of color across the top. I also used bamboo batting from Winline Textiles. Her bamboo is perfection…it’s what I prefer in my own quilts. Please request it if I quilt for you…you’ll love it, too!

Denice requested Ginger Snap by Apricot Moon Designs, for the quilting design and it’s such a fun choice! It’s available at Urban Elementz.

If you look up closely at this pattern, it’s just a variation of different rectangles placed in the perfect spot to create such a cool illusion.

Squint and look at the image below…wow!! I get to work on the coolest quilts!

Marsha’s Rose Embroidery Quilt

Hi There,

I’m excited to share with you some of the custom quilting details on this beautiful quilt that Marsha made.

She embroidered the Rose Blocks from Ace Points Embroidery, and then designed the rest of the quilt. I love the sweet blue floral she used, it pairs nicely with the rose blocks.

I used my favorite Natural White Omni thread from Superior Threads, and 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline Textiles.

As you can see, I echoed around the embroidery blocks.

To try and create a beautiful frame around the Rose blocks, I quilted a couple of different curves. You can see a video of me quilting a block like the one below on my instagram.

I used my 9” Circle2 machine quilting circle ruler to quilt the arcs around the outside of the orange peel petals. My Circle2 ruler sets are available in my shop.

I used an Edge ruler from Linda at The Quilted Pineapple to quilt those beautiful lines. I quilted the lines leaving a 1/2” space between them, it’s simple and beautiful.

I used my 4” Circle2 ruler for the orange peel petals, after quilting a line with an Edge ruler of Linda’s. I love mixing lines and curves, when I custom quilt.

Skye’s Hammock Quilt

I recently quilted this beautiful quilt for Skye!! I love the colors and prints in the Heather Ross “Sleeping Porch” fabrics. The pattern is called Hammock Quilt by Golly Patterns by Suppose Quilt Boutique, Skye got the kit from Suppose awhile ago. Suppose is a local fabric shop in Preston Idaho.

I used my favorite Natural White Omni thread from Superior Threads.

I also used 8020 cotton poly comfort blend batting from Winline Textiles.

I gave Skye a few options for quilting, and she chose Soho by Sarah Ann Myers. It’s available at Urban Elementz. It’s such a fun versatile design.

I love the quilty Soho texture. It dances across the quilt.

June’s Florence Flamingo Quilt

Have you ever seen a Florence Flamingo quilt that you didn’t love??? I haven’t.

June made this Florence Flamingo quilt, a pattern by Elizabeth Hartman, and she did a beautiful job.

The background fabric is a peachy tan color, which is perfect behind all the pops of colors.

June chose Tahitian Pearl, which is one of Patricia Ritter and my panto designs, for the quilting. Tahitian Pearl is available at Urban Elementz. I love the soft swirls and circles that dance across the quilt.

I used a cream Omni thread from Superior Threads and my favorite 8020 comfort blend batting from Winline Textiles.

Which flamingo is your favorite? Mine is probably the hot pink one in the center on the top row.

Susan’s Southwest Quilt

Today I have a quick quilt to share with you…this fun southwest quilt that Susan made.

She used the squash block pattern, which you can google to find several free options. Then she offset the blocks with a plain square to add some beautiful negative space, which helps the squash blocks pop.

She used a variety of fun pepper printed fabrics that she found in New Mexico.

I actually started quilting a different design on this quilt, and didn’t like it. I was talking with my longarm friends, and Kait suggested a design similar to this…so I decided to try my Half Square Twist design, and I’m so glad I did. The design goes so well with the quilt pattern. Half Square Twist is available in my shop.

I used my favorite thread color, Natural White Omni from Superior Threads and the 8020 comfort blend batting from Winline Textiles.

Check out that texture. I’m loving the horizontal lines in the quilt block and quilting design.

Susan’s Lapis Luster Quilt

Here it is…A full look at Susan’s Lapis Luster quilt. It’s a stunner!! Susan designed this pattern and plans to enter it into a quilt show. I’m excited to hear how she does.

Quilts like this can be intimidating for me to quilt, because of all the negative space. Susan left the quilting design up to me. I love that because it allows me to be completely creative. So lets start with the very center, which was the hardest thing for me to figure out. I thought and thought and thought about it. I actually have a couch across from the longarm, and so I turned my timer off and just sat and stared at this center section trying to figure out what to do. I had already quilted designs in each of the other borders. Everything I was thinking was going to clash with the solid white border next to it. So I started with the simple elongated x’s that connect the square pinwheel blocks. Which then created a 4 pointed star around the squares. I love a 4 pointed star, but that wasn’t really what I was going for. By connecting all of those star points together, I created a octagon shape which actually reminded me of some kaleidoscope quilts that I’ve quilted in the past.

For all of the lines in this quilt, I used Linda from The Quilted Pineapple’s Edge ruler.

I started with the outside border on this quilt, like I do with nearly every quilt and worked my way to the center. However, this time I’m going to start sharing from the center of the quilt and work my way to the outside. If I were to start quilting the center of this quilt first, it would be a mess. There are two layers of batting and they definitely wouldn’t have laid flat. Always start at the top and work your way down, it’s so much easier to handle the battings with the quilt top.

Then I reached for my 5” Circle2 ruler and quilted these lovely petals, which filled up the negative space perfectly, and it drew your eye away from the 4 pointed star. The petals also mimic some of the other petals throughout the quilt, which creates an overall cohesive design. Plus, it makes the center stand out. Which was what I needed to accomplish with the quilting in all of the negative space. I also used my 2” Circle2 ruler to quilt simple petals in the blue squares.

These are my 5”/11” (above) and 2”/8” (below) Circle2 rulers. For years I couldn’t find a good set of circle rulers, so I created these ones. The 3/4th of a circle design allows us to comfortably move the ruler around while quilting. They are made in America with high quality 1/4” acrylic. Do you have a set yet? No…Head over to my shop and get yourself one.

Just look at all the possibilities rulers provide when custom quilting.

I don’t share progress pictures very often when the quilts I quilt are on the longarm, this time I have a few. And, lucky you…I have some videos to share, too.

If you’re interested in learning how to quilt the line design in the triangle blocks, watch the video above. It’s a good one. This design is great in a variety of different shapes, my favorite the flying geese triangles. It can also frame the other designs or blocks around it very nicely.

With a solid white border, I had lots of room to play. Watch the video below to see how I quilted this beautiful floral motif. You could totally quilt this, too! It’s fun to see what I can do with a little bit…or a ton of…thread. I used my 5” Circle2 to quilt the floral motifs.

Now, look at all of those designs together…That quilty texture makes me heart so happy!!

I have another video for you…this one is a two-for-one. Lucky you! I share how I quilt a background and a motif in a block all without stopping and cutting the thread. I do this as much as I can when I quilt. Saves so much time.

This is my 3”/9” Circle2 ruler that I used for the petals in the circles. I also mention in the video my Quilting It Freemotion course. This design is my Overlapping Circles design. Check it out if you love to quilt freemotion or are just trying to get started.

This border turned out beautiful, especially next to the 1” lines in the next border. I love mixing up textures with the lines and curves.

A look at the center and two borders, do you love it too…Hope so!

Now, lets head to the outer border. My freehand Swirly Feather design was the first design I quilted on this quilt, in fact when I first saw the quilt that is what immediately came to mind. I works so beautifully with the fabrics that Susan used, and easily dresses up the solid fabric. This design is great on an entire quilt. I have quilted it many many many times all over. It’s great in a border, background, inside applique, and just about anywhere on a quilt. I highly recommend learning this one. Bonus, it’s a very forgiving design. Definitely one that I make up as I go. It’s also part of my Quilting It Freemotion course.

After starting with the Swirly Feathers, I quilted these orange peel petals using Linda’s -8- curve ruler as a guide. It wasn’t a perfect fit, but it helped me accomplish the design that you can see. After quilting a couple of lines on each side of the petal, I quilted freehand Pebbles to fill up the space. I quilting something else in the middle of the petals and didn’t like it, so I unpicked…yes, I do unpick sometimes. Then I decided on the Loops. I love the overall look, and wait until you see each of these rather simple designs all together on the quilt back. IT LOOKS AMAZING!

A look at all of the borders with the center of the quilt. I love it all! After spending nearly 13 hours on this quilt, I was so fun to see it all come together.

I used a ton of Natural White Omni thread, which you know if my favorite color…haha! I get it from Superior Threads. I also used two battings. When I do a double batting I start with a thinner batting on bottom, like the 8020 comfort blend from Winline Textiles on the bottom, and then put a layer of Hobbs wool on top. I have done this combination several times, even on a few of my own quilts and as you can see the quilty texture pops soooo good.

Awe…I just love it and so does Susan!! Can’t wait for her to see it in person.

Check out the backing…this is what I was talking about. Don’t forget to look at the loops in the orange peel centers.

Jeanenne’s Mystery Block of the Month

Hi there,

Spring is just around the corner, and beautiful quilts like this one that Jeanenne made are helping me get more excited for sunshine and flowers.

The pattern and kit were part of the Fat Quarter Shop’s 2018 Mystery Block of the Month. Beautiful, huh?!?!

I used my favorite Natural White Omni thread from Superior Threads, and 8020 cotton poly comfort blend batting from Winline Textiles.

What made me even more excited was quilting out the lovely Sprig panto design by my good friend Shelly’s mum. She has some fun panto designs. You should go check them out.

Sampler quilts can be a lot of fun. Have you made one before? I have. I learn new techniques each time.
