Donna’s Land That I Love quilt

Donna was invited to be apart of a big quilt show in southern Utah and wanted to display her incredible Land That I Love quilt!!

The Land That I Love pattern is by Verna from The Vintage Spool. https://www.thevintagespool.com/product-page/land-that-i-love …isn’t it such an amazing sampler quilt?!?!?!!

Donna added the blocks at the bottom to commemorate the 250th anniversary.

Donna requested custom quilting, which was so fun for me! Trying to highlight each block individually and create beautiful textures at the same time. It took me 11 hours to freehand/freemotion custom quilt this quilt. No computerized designs were used.

In the flag I wanted to create a little movement, yet enhance the shape. I quilted 1/4” pinstripes in the stars as well as the red and cream stripes that go diagonally up. I quilted four pointed squares in each of the squares too. The solid blue squares have three 1/2" diagonal lines the cross with the diagonal lines going the opposite direction. To create a plaid effect around the stars.

I wish you could see the beautiful texture in person. I carried that throughout the flag to the right side.

I hope you’ll notice in these pictures the overall cohesive look of the quilt, as I repeated several of the designs into different blocks to help it come together so beautifully. From background fillers and curves, to lines and even the classic stipple. On a quilt like this, that celebrates our history, I thought Stippling would fit in so nicely.

My birthday is the day after the 4th, which means I absolutely love all things patriotic.

Now, let’s look closer at the details…

Lady Liberty with some little details, and Overlapping Circles as the background filler.

I teach Overlapping Circles in my Quilting It Freemotion video course on my website. Go to: https://www.quiltingit.com/quilting-it-freemotion-course

Some Pebbles, which I also teach in my course, as well as lots of lines, some curves which I did with my Circle2 rulers and some ribbon candy. Classic quilty goodness.

My Circle2 rulers are available in my shop. Go to: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop

More lines and curves, having my Circle2 rulers allows me to quilt curve from as little as 2” up to 13”. I LOVE the curves I was able to create in the star block above.

I wanted this block, which is the largest block on the quilt, to stand out! The curves beautifully dance around the block and the lines frame it so perfectly.

I each of these appliqué and pieced blocks I tried to enhance the shapes and create fun background textures that help them stand out from one another without over powering the ones next to it. Harmony is my goal, I think I achieved it.

How darling is this bicycle, like seriously!! One of my favorite blocks. I only quilted a little on the bike itself, it really is about creating beautiful texture in the background to make the bike pop.

When it comes to quilting lines, don’t be afraid of mixing up all the textures. From diagonal 1/4” pinstripes to cross hatching to a 1/4” diamond plaid with 1/4” vertical and horizontal lines around the door and to echo the roof line. Love it all! Creating didn’t line designs while I’m in the moment, is one of my favorite things.

I used Linda’s Edge rulers from The Quilted Pineapple. Her strait rulers are my favorite. Go to: https://www.thequiltedpineapple.com/shop/

It’s amazing all these cute little blocks fit together perfectly in this quilt. I’m loving all the little details.

For the blocks at the bottom I wanted to keep the quilting simple, so I quilted 1/2” and 1/4” lines to frame it beautifully.

I decided to try four pointed rectangle stars, and I love them!! Easy to do. Start with a quilted X and then find a line on the ruler and use that reference pointed as you work your way around the X. Love it!!

I used my favorite 4 oz bamboo batting from Winline Textiles, based out of northern Utah. Go to: https://www.winlinetextiles.com/winline-100bamboo-s/145.htm

I also used my favorite Omni thread to quilt it. Cream and Navy threads were perfect for this quilt.
