Kathy’s Quilt Room Quilt

When my friend Kathy brought over her Quilt Room quilt I instantly knew it was going to be so much for me to custom quilt. Don’t worry I have oodles of pictures to share with you, as well as all the quilty details.

The pattern is called Quilt Room by Heather from My Sew Quilty Life. It’s one of her block of the month patterns. Here is a link to the pdf pattern. She also has paper patterns for sale, check her website for those. Go to: https://www.mysewquiltylife.com/product-page/quilt-room-bom-pdf-pattern-bundle

I knew that I wanted to do my Overlapping Circles freehand quilting design in the entire background, so I wanted to create several other textures to enhance that bubbly background texture.

Overlapping Circles is something that I teach in my Quilting It Freemotion course, here’s a link to that video. https://www.quiltingit.com/quilting-it-freemotion-course/p/gn8izw5h2m5otf2xkq7zs7fax4vb6p-trp7l and to check out the rest of my course, go to: https://www.quiltingit.com/quilting-it-freemotion-course

If freemotion quilting isn’t your thing, I have a panto inspired by Overlapping Circles, it’s called Mother of Pearl and is available at Urban Elementz. Go to: https://www.urbanelementz.com/mother-of-pearl.html

The top and bottom of the quilt has a pink border. I decided a 1” cross hatch would be a perfect frame for the entire quilt.

In the quilt banner I quilted quarter inch pinstripes behind the letters and hearts, and a half inch cross hatch inside the hearts.

For all of the lines on this quilt, I used my favorite Edge rulers from Linda at The Quilted Pineapple. Go to: https://www.thequiltedpineapple.com/shop/

When I saw that there were quilts on a quilt ladder, of course they each had to be quilted different as if they had been longarm quilted. I used my Circle2 rulers to quilt the curves. 3” and 4”, and I think the 9” for the quilting in the sashing of the quilt below. My Circle2 rulers are available in my shop. Of course, I had to add some freehand ribbon candy in the outer border of the quilt below.

Using one of Linda‘s Edge rulers I quilted 1/2” 45° diagonal lines on the quilt ladder, which created the perfect simple texture.

It may have been fun to freehand a wood grain design on the ladder, but it didn’t fit the overall style of the quilt, fabrics or quilting. Lines are exactly what it needs.

I’m loving all of those quilts hanging together, and all that beautiful texture.

These are embroidery hoops. Kathy suggested I quilt an edge around the outside, then I quilted a fun design inside each center. Also loving all the bubbly Overlapping Circles in the background behind the hoops.

To start off the bulletin board/pegboard, I quilted freehand circles, also known as pebbles, around the border. Which is also a design I teach in my Quilting It Freemotion course. Go to: https://www.quiltingit.com/quilting-it-freemotion-course/p/gn8izw5h2m5otf2xkq7zs7fax4vb6p-jbfy3

For the texture on the board itself, I did 3/4” grid. Which I think highlights the tools as well as the mini quilt. I also added some simple line textures to the tools themselves. Because I had quilted around the rulers I left that un-quilted. The to-do list got a half inch cross hatch.

I quilted the mini quilt exactly like the bottom quilt on the quilt ladder. I love those curves so much! The perfect frame around each of those blocks. Quilted with my Circle2 rulers, which are available in my shop. https://www.quiltingit.com/shop

This is one of my Circle2 rulers, the 3”/9”. The inside circle is 3” and the outside circle is 9”. Check the details about them in my shop. https://www.quiltingit.com/shop

I love all the sweet sections of this quilt!! Next up the sewing table, where all the creating happens. I quilted a 1/2” crosshatch on the table and the legs, with an exception of a triple pinstripe on the table top with a 3/4” space between each pinstripe set, which I also did on the wood of the bookcase top and bottom. I quilted 1/4” lines in the sewing mat and the pin jar, a plaid in the tomato, and pinstripes in the jar. Lines are a very easy way to add great texture and yet not make it over the top.

I quilted pinstripes in the iron, as well as very fine lines on the handle and the base of the iron.

Quilted half inch 45° lines on the bench cushion, and pinstripes on the dog bed. Also, Kathy had a dalmatian. I thought it was such a fun touch to include her on her quilt. If you look close, you can see the fur I quilted.

The sewing machine got 1/2” vertical lines, swirls in the knobs, and a 45° lines on the left side of the head of the machine. Also, I had to add texture to the project on the sewing machine. Simple curves and lines do the trick.

Yarn, buttons, bobbins, and spools all got their own textures. 1/4” lines and orange peels for the yarn. 1/2” cross hatch on the basket, curves and lines on the buttons, and ribbon candy and lines for the bobbins and spools.

With the books, I kept it pretty simple and added lines in various directions. The scrap bins got a 45° diamond texture and a pinstripe grid. For the bolts of fabric I kept it pretty simple, I love the varying texture of pinstripes, diagonal lines, and the ribbon candy.

On the bookcase itself, I kept it pretty simple and just did a quarter inch line echoing the outside shape of the bookcase.

Here is the right angle of the quilt, look at all the textures. And the left angle below. Love it so much!!

I used Natural White Omni thread from Superior Threads to quilt it. Go to: https://www.superiorthreads.com/omni-3002-natural-white/p/134-02-3002?show=Cones and don’t forget to use my non-affiliate code ASTLEISHA at checkout for 15% off your next order.

I used my favorite 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline Textiles. Go to: https://www.winlinetextiles.com/blended-battings-winline-comfort-blend-s/127.htm

This quilt took me a little over 10 hours to quilt. It is all done freehand or freemotion. Nothing was quilted by the computer.

And one more close up of Kathy’s pup.
