Laser Cut Quilts • Fall 2019 Quilt Market

Laser Cut Quilts is a wholesale company that cuts appliqué kits with their Flexi Fuse interfacing already fused to the back, so all you need to do is peel off the back paper…place the piece and press!! These are their new Quilt Market Releases!! For more info on them and what kits they offer, go to: https://lasercutquilts.com If there is a kit that you love, request it through your local quilt shop.

They are going to be in booth #954 at Houston Quilt Market, so stop by, if you’re going to market and check out all their amazing quilts!

First up! How cute is this little guy?!?!?!!!! Designed by Madi Hastings, meet Doxie Love! He’s probably my most favorite of their new releases.

I used white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread for the background, and black thread for his suit coat, and a lighter brown thread for all his body. I also used Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

Look at that face!!!

I used Linda from The Quilted Pineapple’s Edge rulers, to quilt all the 1/2” lines. Go here to check them out: https://thequiltedpineapple.bigcartel.com

I decided with the body to quilt a wood grain in each of the brown pieces. I love the texture it added to him.

For the background, I used my newest design which is a variation of my Squared design…I used Diamond Squared©️! And…I love it! It nests beautifully, just like Squared. It’s currently only available in my shop. Go here: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop

Here is the backing…cool, huh?!!!!!

Next up…Maiden of the Sea, also designed by Madi Hastings. Isn’t she amazing!!!

I used A variety of different colors of thread on this one. White, Aqua, boysenberry, tan, and a variegated blue…which added some fun texture to her hair. I also used my favorite Winline 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

I wanted some fun swirly/wavy texture in the background. So I used Patricia Ritter and my Breeze©️ design. It’s available at Urban Elementz go here: https://www.urbanelementz.com/breeze.html and I love how it turned out!!

With her face and hair, I just wanted to add texture to create movement and not take away from how beautiful she is. I love how she came together with the quilting texture.

I think her arms and hands are my favorite part!

With her tail, I want to keep it simple, so I quilted 1/2” diagonal lines.

Here is another look at the background. Love it!!!

Okay, how amazing is this tree skirt?!?!?!! This one is called Peppermint by Madi Hastings, using Allison Glass’ Holidays fabrics.

I used my favorite Winline 8020 batting and white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread. When quilting a tree skirt, that already has an opening, I center it on the quilting machine and have the opening at the bottom. Placed like pictured above. That way I can get the opening in the right spot.

I love all those pretty colors!

I wanted to create tons of texture. Each colored section has 9 pieces in it. I quilted 9 different designs, one in each block, and then mixed them up as I quilted each of the colored strips. As shown in the pictures.

I also alternated swirls and overlapping circles, in the background strips.

Lines, squares, stars, scallops…

Ribbon candy…and more lines…

More lines, and twists.

Such a fun one to quilt!!

Next up, Celebrating the Season by Madi Hastings! So cute!!!

This is the perfect wall hanging! I used several different colors of thread on their one. Did my best to match those beautiful colors. I also used my favorite 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline.

I wanted to create lots of fun texture on this one, too! I quilted a vertical line design that has notches and rounded edges. And, of course some 1/2” angled lines. Using my favorite Edge rulers from Linda!

I love a good crackle background. This crackle design is done freehand, but if you feel more comfortable using a ruler…go for it!

Overlapping swirls is one of my favorite background textures. It adds so much fun texture! Some lines and ribbon candy in the stripe on the hat!

The border is actually ribbon candy, too! It’s a fun freehand design, and perfect for a small border or sashing.

Next up, Dreamer designed by Ashley Greer! I love how the texture added so much to the background on this one!

I used a dark aqua thread, as well as a white and brown thread. And, Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

I quilted a freehand wood grain in the background, simple randomly spaced pinstripes on the feathers, ribbon candy on the brown hoop, and a fun block design inside the center of the hoop…scroll down to see.

Love that texture!!

I used my Flurries Block 5, only available in my shop: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop and I think it turned out beautifully!!!

Next up…. Soul of Spring! By Alyssa Woolstenhulme. I quilted a smaller version of this one last year for them…and I quilted it completely different.

I used several different colors of thread, whatever blended the best! I also used my favorite Winline 8020. It’s my go to batting, if you haven’t noticed!

I love the variety of textures together!! Lots of fun movement.

My favorite is that wood grain behind the bird!!

There is some more crackle!!

So…have you wondered how I quilt the diamond cross hatch. I first start with 3/4ths of an inch angled lines, and then quilt vertical 3/4ths of an inch lines. I love how dressy it makes something. The body of the bird, pictured above a couple pictures, also has this quilted on it.

Makes me ready for spring. Haha!

Next, we have Sew in Love with Life designed by Madi Hastings.

Those spools and big cross stitch x’s are my favorite!!

I quilted Soho by Sarah Ann Myers on it!! It’s available at Urban Elementz: https://www.urbanelementz.com/?acc=12 I love this design!! It reminds me of spools unwinding. Which is why I picked it.

I used white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread, which is a nice thick poly wrapped poly thread. I used Winline’s 8020!

Those spools!!!

Next up, Bloom with Grace by Madi Hastings. How sweet is this one!!

Also, making me dream of Spring.

I had seen this design used by other quilters, and then come to find out it was a free design on my Statler. It’s by Wasatch Quilting and is called New Moon Loops. It reminds me of seeds, which I thought would look beautifully on this quilt.

I used a white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 batt.

Next up, Handspun Sunshine by Alyssa Woolstenhulme.

After I quilted this one, they added some appliqué petals. Go here to see it: https://lasercutquilts.com/shop/product/handspun-sunshine-1334?category=1

I used Flower Child by Apricot Moon Designs, to quilt it. It’s available at Urban Elementz: https://www.urbanelementz.com/?acc=12 It’s such a great flower design!!

Don’t forget about the other quilts I quilted for Laser Cut Quilts in the last few months, they will also be at Quilt Market!!
Details about these quilts are in this blog post: https://www.quiltingit.com/blog/2019/8/30/z2lgx7r8a49mhse73heohijb9jbn0f

Thanks for being here and checking out my quilting! It means a lot! Hope you enjoying checking out what is new for Laser Cut Quilts!! I’ve said it before, I love their Flexi Fuse, if you appliqué give it a try!! I love it! I recently made a pillow using it…and I hand stitched around each of those acorns, and not a single sore finger. It also quilts up so easily, compared to other interfacing!! Check them out here: https://flexifuse.com/?ref:leisha

More info about this pillow in my next blog post!!
Happy Quilt Market to those who are going, and Happy Weekend to the rest of us.

Hello!! I hope you’re enjoying fall or spring…depending on where you are. It’s fall here…or it’s at least starting to cool off. Which means fall/market/Christmas quilting is underway over here. I am going to share what I can, when I can, and hopefully it inspires you!

This first quilt is actually mine. It took 2 years to make, yes it’s a large queen, and yes I’m slow. I used to hurry through projects, and it just wasn’t fun for me. So, I schedule sewing each week and take my time.

I have wanted to make this quilt for years, and had collected several Bonnie and Camille charm packs, and so I finally started. I sorted all the squares into colors. It’s okay that there are more red than any color and only a few orange and yellow blocks. The pattern is Modern Vintage by Bonnie and Camille. It was published in a magazine years ago, but now is in Bonnie’s “Cotton Way Classics” book. Which was sold out on her website last time I looked. So it can be found here on amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Cotton-Way-Classics-Quilts-Charming/dp/1604688785

I used my fun Sweet Orange Peel©️ design to quilt it, it’s only available in my shop: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop/sweet-orange-peel

I decided to put Hobbs wool batting in this one and I used 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread.

A view of the sweet backing fabric and binding!! Love it! Plus, a look at my cute handmade by Leisha Kaye tag.

Next, if you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you may have seen this quilting texture!!

This super fun feather quilt is called “Aviary” by Madi Hastings from Laser Cut Quilts. They create kits for stores to buy/sale. So, if there is something you love…go to their website and see where you can purchase a kit, or ask your local quilt shop to buy the kit you’d like.

I knew I wanted to create some texture with the quilting that creates movement, yet adds a bunch of interest to all that negative background.

I used Winline’s 8020 and… lots and lots of white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread. I did use black thread in the black fabric on the feather, it’s also a 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread.

I went with 1/4” pinstripes a 1/2” apart, at different angles in each piece of the feather.

In the black pieces, I quilted with my grassy wavy texture. Which I think goes nicely with the pinstripes and the fun background texture.

If you’re going to Fall Quilt Market, you may see this on there!!

Next up…this cool Canadian flag. Our neighbor is returning this week from serving as a missionary in Canada for our church. His mom made him this flag quilt, which includes his name, mission, and dates he was gone, embroidered on the bottom.

Caroline wanted something different in the leaf, than the rest of the quilt. I quilted Diagonal Plaid by Patricia Ritter, which is available at Urban Elementz, in the background and then I quilted 1” squares on point in the leaf. I used a Edge ruler from Linda at The Quilted Pineapple to quilt the squares.

I used Deep Cardinal red 30 Tex A&E Perma Core thread on the leaf, and white 30 Tex A&E Perma Core thread to quilt the rest of the quilt. I also used my favorite Winline 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

I love the contrast of the diagonal plaid and on point squares.

Next up, how sweet is this cute runner?!?!?!!!! Barbara has been making her daughter runners all year. She asked about a sunflower pattern, and I remembered a quilt I quilted called Cottage Blossoms by Vanessa from Lella’s Boutique. Barbara found out she has a mini quilt, and so she used that pattern for the flowers, and just added the sashing and borders.

I used a 8020 batting scrap that Barbara had, and white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread.

I just love the angles on this flower, so that’s why…

I chose to quilt my Diamond Chain©️ design on it. It’s available in my shop or at Urban Elementz. I think it’s a perfect fit on this Cottage Blossoms flower, because of the angles of the design and of the flowers.

This is a take on my Sweet Orange Peel design, yet in a diamond shape.

This fun pattern was done by Heather from Punkin Patch Craft Designs. It is in the next issue of Quilt Mania magazine, which should be coming out this week!! I think it is issue 133. (If I counted correctly.)

Everything except the sashing, and the blue background is wool appliqué. It would be a fun fall project.

I quilted 1” on point squares, a grassy design in the background, and wood grain the the tree. I quilted this months ago…so I think I used a cream thread in everything but the tree trunks…which I used brown. I think I used a wool batting too…I may have even double layered the batting with an 8020. I can’t remember.

I didn’t quilt the leaves or the animals, except to outline an arm or a wing. They pop!!

I’m hoping to get myself a copy of this magazine!! Heather said they are available at Barnes and Noble, and since there isn’t one anywhere close to me, I’m going to hopefully find it online. I saw that Fat Quarter Shop carries this magazine, hopefully they get this magazine in stock soon!!

Incredible that I don’t have a ton of quilts this time…it helps that I blogged a week and a half ago. I have some I can’t quite share yet, or ones I didn’t take pictures of.

My newest digital quilting design is Diamond Squared©️ and is available only in my shop. It quilts out just as nice as Squared©️ does, and it needs to be offset every other row. With the Statler, I can use the alternating design option during the Edge to Edge set up, and it lines up perfectly.

Also, I wanted to share a thought…I recently had someone contact me from South Africa about my rulers. She asked if I was going to be at quilt market, I’m not. So she is having me ship a set to her hotel here in America while she’s here for market, so she doesn’t have to pay shipping. If you’re interested in have me ship a set to your hotel, if you’re coming for market, let me know!! You’ll have to arrange it with your hotel, and put their address in for shipping. I thought that was an excellent idea for those of you interested in my rulers, yet you don’t want to pay the international shipping. Email me at quiltingit@gmail.com with subject line “rulers” and we can’t get the details worked out. My rulers are only available in my shop.

They come in a set of 6, ranging in size starting at 2” and going up to 13”. There are 2 circles per ruler. They are available in green or clear high quality acrylic, and are 1/4” thick. They can be used on longarm quilting machines or on a domestic sewing machine with the proper quilting foot.

For more info about my rulers, check out this blog post: https://www.quiltingit.com/blog/2018/10/10/introducing-my-circle2-longarm-circle-ruler-set

Thanks for being here and letting me share what I’ve been up to the last week. I have some fun market quilts to share, stay tuned!!

Happy quilting!! Have a great week! -Leisha

Hello~!! I hope you’re all doing well. I just got back from one of my all time favorite places, bear lake. If you follow me over on Instagram (@leishakaye) you may have seen the smooth beautiful blue water. It’s such a peaceful wonderful place, which we try to visit 1-2 times a year. I love it!! For me, this means summer is coming to a close, and fall/Christmas quilting is kicking into high gear. If you’re in need of getting something quilted before Christmas, plan ahead and let me know. You can email me at quiltingit@gmail.com or contact me through my website.

I have oodles of pictures to show you from the quilts that I’ve been quilting!! I hope you enjoy the variety of quilts and quilting!!

First up, this amazing appliquéd bird is by Laser Cut Quilts and is called Hummingbird (In the dawn color way). I’ve mentioned before how nice their interfacing is. Laser Cut Quilts designed a interfacing called Flexi Fuse, and it’s such a breeze to quilt, especially when it comes to all those layers. Go here to check it out: Flexi Fuse. On https://lasercutquilts.com/ They have a huge selection of designs.

I quilted this custom…free handed overlapping circles and feathers, with some lines for a different texture. I show how I quilt overlapping circles on my YouTube channel, https://youtu.be/x0UNyEJdm9Y

If I remember right, I used a dark gray thread for the bird, and white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread for everything else. I used my favorite 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline.

Those swirly feathers on the bird are just my favorite!! I kept the flowers simple, just added texture.

This next quilt is also a kit from Laser Cut Quilts and is called "Cut Sew Press Repeat" is designed by Jemima Flendt from Tied with a Ribbon.

I wanted to keep the quilting modern, so I did a 1/2” woven line design. This is fun to do in borders or sashing when you just aren’t quite sure what to quilt. I do have a YouTube video about this design, however the fabric and thread were black, so I need to do a new video.

I used a Edge ruler from Linda at www.thequiltedpineapple.com, to make the lines. I also used white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

This next quilt, made up of 1/2 square triangles…colored fabric/low volume, was made by Madi Hastings one of the creative minds/owners at Laser Cut Quilts. She told me she didn’t follow a pattern on this one.

I quilted Soho on it from Sarah Ann Myers, and it’s available at Urban Elementz. This is one of my favorites!!

I used my favorite 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline, and white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread.

I just love that it softens up the quilt, by having the curves in the quilting design. Plus, it adds great movement.

This next quilt was made by Barbara and is called Patchwork Party Quilt, by Fern the owner of Village Dry Goods in Brigham City Utah. Go to http://www.villagedrygoods.com or call (435) 723-1315 for the pattern.

Such a beautiful quilt!!!

If you ever want to develop different sewing skills, find a sampler like this with lots of different blocks. Especially, if the pattern has time saving tips or tricks. I’ve done a few of those, and they are quite fun!!

I used Wisteria from Patricia Ritter at Urban Elementz. It quilts out beautifully, and is a great pairing to the fabrics used in this quilt.

A couple close ups.

I used Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting and if I remember right the Dyed Natural 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread.

This next one I made. I have a new nephew coming in a few weeks, and his dad is absolutely obsessed with plaid. I recently saw someone made a buffalo plaid quilt, and used a Moda cross weave for the mid grade color…I thought that was brilliant. It’s hard to find that mid grade color, when making one of these quilts. I used a white on white that a bunch of this shape “V” all over it. And then I used a Artisan Woven in black from Windom, for the darkest gray square. These squares were cut at 4”. I actually cut 4” strips and sewed them together, and then cross cut them at 4”, so it was super fast. Scroll down to see the perfect backing fabric. I should say, the nursery has a classy outdoors theme.

I can’t wait to snuggle our new little one up in this quilt. My mom machine bound it for the many washes it will have.

I just love this quilty texture, mixed with the plaid quilt design.

I used my Squared©️ design, which is available in my shop and at Urban Elementz.

Ta-da!! Look at the backing!!! Love!

Seriously, those trees are the cutest!! When I saw them, I knew I wanted that to be the back fabric. They are by Lella Boutique from Moda. I think I want to make a winter/Christmas pillow, with this fabric.

I was excited to add my Handmade by Leisha Kaye, quilt tag to it. I had them made by Custom Labels 4 U. They are such great quality and so great to work with.

Next up, a couple of pillows made by Sherry. The first one is part of the pillow of the month kits, that My Girlfriends Quilt Shoppe in Logan Utah, has been doing for the last year. Contact them to see if they still have kits or patterns available. https://mygirlfriendsquiltshoppe.com/shoppe/ • The flag pillow is a kit or pattern that they had available, as well.

Each state in the USA has a nickname, Utah is the Beehive state. I’m not sure, but I’m guessing that’s why they did a pillow with a beehive. Plus, it’s perfect for summer.

I quilted 1/2” cross hatching lines with a Edge ruler from Linda at The Quilted Pineapple. I also did the overlapping circles, and a swirl feather in the honeycombs.

Sherry brought some batting scraps, but I’m guessing they are the 8020 cotton poly winline batting, that I’ve used on some of her quilts. I used a white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread.

Next up…I love love this one!! My birthday is right after the 4th of July, so all things red white and blue, just make me happy.

It’s been awhile since I’ve quilted Patricia Ritter and my Liberty©️ design on anything. It’s a take on our very popular Marmalade, the difference…the stars replaced the feathers petals in Marmalade. Go to Urban Elementz to find it.

I used white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread, and Sherry brought a batting scrap for this one, too.

When it comes to selecting the size of a design, I tend to go smaller than the suggested size. On this particular pillow, I went really small. I think it was less than 4” in height. I wanted the design to show up nicely on the pillow. I do suggest to look at the size of the blocks on the quilt, and the size of the prints in the fabric, and scale the design appropriately. If something is too big, it’s going to compete for attention and same with too small. You really want the quilting to complement and enhance the quilt. This is why I charge by the hour. I don’t want to just rush through a quilt, but I want to select the best size for the quilt blocks and fabric prints. Let me know if you have any questions about this, and I can do another post or a video.

This next quilt was made by Lisa, the pattern is Throwing by Brigitte Heitland. The fabric line is True Blue by Zen Chic with some grunge fabrics thrown in. I love the geometric look to the block layout.

I suggested to Lisa, my Squared©️ design, and I’m glad she said yes! Because of the angles, I think the on point Squared design, adds great texture to this quilt. Squared is available in my shop and at Urban Elementz, like I mentioned before.

I used Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 cotton/poly blend batting.

This design goes well with sooo many quilt patterns. I love every quilt I quilt it on!!!

Close ups of that texture.

Next up, this cute Pumpkin quilt made by Sherry. The pattern is called Pumpkin by Allison Harris from Cluck Cluck Sew. Pattern is available here: (and by the way, have you seen her Bat quilt, soooo cute) https://cluckclucksewshop.com/

I think I need to make this one, at some point. Such a cute quilt!

The fabrics on the stems, is the same design as my Sweet Orange Peel©️ design, so I thought they would pair nicely with each other. Plus I’ve seen my friend Abby, quilt my Sweet Orange Peel on some of these Pumpkin quilts. It’s like a whole bunch of little pumpkin seeds. Sweet Orange Peel is only available in my shop.

I love the pop of orange against the gray.

I used white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread, and Winline’s 8020 cotton poly.

One last close up.

Next, another quilt made by Sherry. The pattern is called Witches Night Out by Its Sew Emma, (https://www.itssewemma.com/) using Fig Tree Quilts fabrics from Joanna Figueroa’s new line All Hallows’ Eve. This line is sooo beautiful and popular, my mom and aunt bought the whole line for their shop and it sold out so quickly. So, it was fun for me to see this one made up.

This is such a fun fun quilt!!

Instead of doing a traditional spider web, I asked Sherry what she thought of doing leaves…she said yes!! So I used a fun design from Denise Schillinger called Grapevine, which is available at Urban Elementz. I just love how it dances across the quilt, like falling leaves.

These pumpkins, and that bat…so perfectly Halloween.

A close up on those leaves. I used Dyed Natural 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

Next up, Lisa made this super cool and modern “Fall Breeze” quilt for her daughter, the pattern and ombré fabrics by Vanessa Christenson from Moda. Pattern available here: https://lnk.bio/TBbK If I remember right the background is a Cross Weave from Moda. Lisa’s daughter requested that the quilting be modern, and I love how it turned out.

Seriously, there is something about Vanessa’s ombré fabrics popping on the gray. Love it!!

To be modern, the leaves got lines…which I’ll get to in a minute, but I wanted the background to have a wood grain look to it. I used a gray thread from Omni for the background, and coordinating threads for each color of leaves.

I just love the texture!!

I used a couple of Edge rulers from Linda at The Quilted Pineapple. I quilted the lines 1/2” apart, at alternating angles. I need to do a video soon, and explain how to do this so that the quilting doesn’t have dominate lines copping it up. After you get started and start creating different angles, I suggest using the lines you create as a boundary and then quilting in that direction 1/2” apart. I’m not talking about boundaries in Edge to Edge quilting. I’m talking about quilting out this line design. Creating a boundary, let’s you know where to quilt to and stop. If you quilt a line without quilting 1/2” lines going in the same direction, it actually disrupts the flow of the design. I will do a video when I quilt this design again. Kind of hard to describe, it would be better to show you.

Some close ups on the leaves.

These Ombré fabrics are just so beautiful!!

Another close up…

Last one!

More of that wooded background.

Next, this super cute cactus pin cushion! This is also a kit from Laser Cut Quilts, all their kits come with their Flexi Fuse interfacing on the back, ready for you to place and iron down. This pattern is called Stuck on Quilting by Ashley Greer. There is a list on the Laser Cut Quilts website, underneath the limited edition quilts tab, and a way to request it in a local quilt shop.

I quilted 1/2” diagonal lines, using an Edge ruler from Linda at The Quilted Pineapple.

Everything else, I quilted freehand.

I used a white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

Okay, how fun is this Unicorn!!! It’s called Unicornia by Madi Hastings from Laser Cut Quilts. Folks, I said it before…the Flexi Fuse that Laser Cut Quilts created is the best! See the multi layered hair, typically with other interfacing it’s a beast to quilt through all those layers. Not Flexi Fuse!! Plus all those holes from the machine needle, that you get when quilting other interfacing, not there with Flexi Fuse!!

If you’ve been following for awhile, you may have seen a couple of quilts I quilted for Laser Cut Quilts, for last years fall market. The woman and scissors quilts…I wanted to kind of combine the quilting from those two quilts, to this quilt. Here is a post with those quilts: Fall Market Release. The face and hair of the woman, are quilted like the head and mane of the unicorn. The doodle quilting in the background of the scissor quilt, is similar to the doodle quilting I did in the background. It’s all about creating texture and some movement. I love love how it turned out.

My tip for quilting a face, don’t do perfectly straight lines. Let it be natural, yet not too crazy. Just a slight curve. Also, quilt the lines close. Same with the hair. Letting there be tiny gaps between the lines, allows the batting to pop a little, and adds some great texture.

I used white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread on everything but the hair. I had a deep aqua thread for that. It’s all about matching the tones, yet white blends nicely with all of the other fabrics. I used Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

That hair was fun to quilt!!! I’m sure if you’re going to quilt market, you may be able to see this in person.

Laurie made this beautiful table runner for her good friend. The block pattern is by Moda, and is their 1st pattern in their 2008-2009 Block of the Month. I think it’s called Selvages pattern number MUP45. Then she added the mini 9 patch and made up the borders and on point layout.

I used a light tan Omni thread, a Deep Cardinal (red) A&E Perma Core 30 tex, and a steel blue Omni thread for the mini border. I used my favorite Winline 8020 batting.

I love how it all came together!

The block design I quilted using my Statler, and it is a free design that came with my Gammill Statler. The name is SCf-196 Twirl Block. I’m not sure who it is by. If anyone knows, please let me know. I always appreciate it when other give me credit for my designs, and I’d like to give credit to them.

I used my 13” Circle2™ machine quilting circle ruler to quilt the curves in the on point blocks. I love the arced diamond look to this design. Plus it’s fun to quilt!! My Circle2™ rulers come in a set of 6, the circles ranging in size from 2” to 13”. There are two different sizes of circles per ruler, and they are made from 1/4” high quality acrylic. The 3/4th of a circle design makes it easy to move around as you quilt. They are available only in my shop, in green or clear. I have a few videos on my YouTube channel or a blog post with more info. They were designed with the hopping foot in mind. When using a circle ruler, the hopping foot adds a 1/2”. So, these rulers have the correct measurements to give you the correct size of circles. The 4” Circle2™ ruler will give you 4” circle, and so on with all the different sizes. Please let me know if you have any questions.

I quilted my favorite organic swirl the feather free hand in the outside border, ribbon candy in the inner border, and 1” lines in the red border using one of Linda’s Edge rulers.

Last quilt, this beautiful quilt made by Lori for her aunt who is turning 80. How sweet!! The pattern is called, Starburst by Missouri Star Quilt Company.

I used Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting and white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread.

Lori decided on Ginger©️ for the quilting, which is one of my favorite feather designs. It’s by Patricia Ritter and me, and is available at Urban Elementz. It quilts out beautifully.

Because the backing is minky, the design is running vertical on the quilt. That happens because minky should be pinned to the quilting machine on the two cut ends, with the selvages on the sides. This is because the greatest stretch should be running horizontally. Less stretch and headache for you when you quilt. So, in this instance the quilt had to be turned lengthwise so it fit the backing.

Here are a couple of close ups, front/back.

I’m so grateful you’re here, and hope you enjoyed all those amazing quilts!! I have lots of quilts to quilt in the coming months, I just wanted to remind you again, let me know if you’d like something quilted before Christmas. There is still time. Contact me through my website or at quiltingit@gmail.com

thank you!! - Leisha

Hexie Flowers

Hi there!! I know that I shared the first of these 3 videos already, in my last blog post, however for your convenience I wanted to share all 3 videos together.

This first video shows how to baste a hexie, and how to sew it to another hexie. I also tell you how I sew a flower together. This is also the video I share all of the supplies that I use.

This second video I share where I keep everything. I know that this particular train case isn’t available anymore at target. However, if you do a google search for “train case”, you can find some great options.

In this last video, I share how I sew my rows to each other. Using the same stitch that I used to sew the hexies and flowers.

Now, I’ll include some pictures from over the years of the process.

Now…I’ll just be over here sewing the rows to each other for awhile. NOTE: I found it was easier and faster to sew a single row to the rows that are already sewn together, than to sew two rows of two together…as shown in the 3rd video. Just easier to fold one row, sew, and fold and sew…and so on. Plus it’s easier to hold.

So…are you thinking you’d like to try making a hexie flower, yet you know you don’t want to make a quilt? Here is a hexie flower that I stitched down on a flower sack dish towel. After making the flower, I removed the papers from behind each hexie and then stitched it right down, with a straight stitch on my sewing machine. If I remember right, I just pinned or held it in place. If it’s moving on you, use some of the glue that you used to glue/baste your flower. That may help. If you don’t have any quilting glue…you can use a glue stick or Elmers glue. It will wash out. Don’t use hot glue or super glue.

Ive also seen hexie flowers on bags and zipper pouches. So, make one! It’s such a fun thing to try.

Please let me know if you have any questions. Happy sewing! - Leisha

Quilting Galore!

Between working and life, I haven’t blogged the amazing quilts and fun runners that I’ve had the privilege of quilting…for awhile. I hope you enjoy the variety of custom and edge to edge quilting, that I’m going to share with you.

First up, this amazing quilt made by my friend and neighbor Karen. She’s made several quilts, and has never had one custom quilted. It was so fun to quilt this for her, especially knowing she was going to keep it and enjoy the quilting. This pattern is by Carrie Nelson. It is from Miss Rosie’s Farmhouse Favorites book and is called Stella Blue.

I just love softening the hard lines in a quilt pattern, with curves in the quilting. That was my plan with this quilt. I love the end result.

I used Winline’s 8020 cotton poly batting, and Dyed Natural 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread.

A close up on the two main blocks.

I used four of my Circle2™ (Circle Squared) rulers to quilt these lovely curves. I used the 3”, 4”, 6”, and 9”. It’s so great to have such a versatile set, ranging in size from 2”-13” circles. These rulers are made from 1/4” thick, high quality acrylic. They are available in clear or green in my shop. For more details go here: Circle2™ . My machine quilting circle rulers can be used on a domestic machine with the correct quilting foot and on a longarm machine with a ruler foot. To check them out in action, go to my YouTube channel here: https://www.youtube.com/user/QuiltingIt

The above picture shows the 3” and the 9” circles. Each ruler has two sizes of circles. The reason being, you get 12 different sizes of circles and you only need 6 rulers. Saves space in your quilting studio and saves you money…because you’re not buying 6 more rulers. (Green set is pictured below)

The quilting in each block is so cohesive and pairs nicely together, while enhancing the quilt blocks. I used the 6” circle ruler to quilt the large orange peel on the corners of the star block.

That beautiful arc diamond design is so fun to quilt, and is my favorite part of quilting on this quilt. I use the 9” circle ruler on that design.

For all the orange peel designs inside the star blocks I used the 3” circle. As pictured above and below.

I used the 4” circle ruler to quilt these petals in these flying geese. I also used an Edge ruler from Linda at The Quilted Pineapple, to quilt all the lines.

All those different sizes of curves just fit so nicely together.

A few pictures of the back. Love it!!

Next, some cute table runners…made by Barbara!

How sweet are these popsicles?!?!?!! The pattern is by Ribbon Candy Quilt Company and is one of their Sizzlin’ Summer Skinnies. Click on their name above, and it will take you right to their website.

I used a white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread, and Winline’s 8020 batting. I mixed the quilting up, by adding a lot of different shapes and textures. Ribbon candy borders, overlapping circles in the background, and a variety of different designs in the popsicle stripes.

Next up, Barbara made this flag runner, using the FREE Wave Your Flag table runner pattern by Fat Quarter Shop.

I used Good Vibrations from Patricia Ritter at Urban Elementz to quilt it. I spaced the wavy lines 3/4ths of an inch apart. I love the texture from these simple wavy lines. I used Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and more of my favorite 8020 cotton poly Winline batting.

I love the dimension that comes from offsetting the flag stripes. I love all things 4th of July. I was born after the fireworks, on the morning of the 5th.

Okay, this watermelon runner…also made by Barbara, is just so fun!! The pattern is by Primrose Cottage Quilts and is called Summertime.

I may be a little biased, but that Sweet Orange Peel quilting design, is a perfect fit for this!! It reminds me of the shape of watermelon seeds. Sweet Orange Peel©️ is available in my shop at www.quiltingit.com/shop and is one of my best sellers!

I used a white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

Now, a few fun projects made by Sherry.

This cute pillow front is from My Girlfriends Quilt Shoppe, here in Logan Utah. It’s part of their pillow of the month club. You’ll have to contact them for a pattern.

I used Good Vibrations from Patricia Ritter at Urban Elementz again to quilt this. I spaced the wavy lines 1/2 of an inch apart. Because it’s a pillow, it works being that tightly quilted. Sherry brought a cotton poly scrap of batting, and I used a white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread to quilt it.

Next up, these lovely runners made by Sherry. Designed By Heather Peterson from Anka's Treasures. This runner is in the Trendy Table 2 book.

Once again I used my Sweet Orange Peel©️ design to quilt it.

I used a Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 batting.

Sherry made two, so I quilted them onto the same quilting back. I quilt on a Gammill 22” machine. So I set the boundary when doing Edge to Edge quilting, as if it were all one quilt. Saves on time. I quilted the first one, rolled it to the next one and easy peasy, done!!

Loranne is a master at making her own patterns from things that inspire her. This lovely quilt was made for her friends new granddaughter.

Loranne requested a double batt, which adds some beautiful texture to the quilt/quilting. I did a bottom layer of the 8020 cotton poly blend batting that I love from Winline, and a top layer of Hobbs Wool. Love the combination of the two. I’ve done the same thing with some of my own quilts.

Pictures really don’t do this quilt justice.

I used the -20- curve ruler for the petals, and some of the Edge rulers for all the straight lines, both are from Linda at The Quilted Pineapple.

Because this quilt has lot of borders, I wanted to make each of them stand out with different yet cohesive quilting designs. I especially love how these corners turned out. I also share a few more pictures to show the border details. The pinstripe border below is done with a 1/4” line and then a inch section.

Airen’s amazing Double Wedding Ring quilt is up next!! It was such a gem to quilt, knowing it is going to be a family heirloom. Airen used Double Wedding Ring Templates by Sharlene Jorgenson which are available here.

I used white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

I wanted to keep the quilting classic, yet show off all the amazing piecing that Airen did.

I used 3 of my Circle2 machine quilting circle rulers (the 4”, 5”, 13”) and Linda’s -15- curve ruler from The Quilted Pineapple.

The quilting inside where the rings overlap, is dainty. A double curved line at a 1/4” spacing, with tiny pebbles, enhances the curves of the rings and the negative space. I quilted swirls with a hook, inside the rings. Checkout the backging pictured below to see the hooks better.

I used this 4” Circle2™ ruler for one of the sets of petals inside the double arcs of the wedding rings.

I used this 5” Circle2™ ruler for the other set of petals in the double arc.

I used the 13” Circle2™ ruler to quilt the 1/4” lines inside where the rings overlap.

I also used the -15- curve ruler from Linda, to quilt the 1/2” arched curves inside the center of the rings. (As pictured below) I hope that makes sense. The reason I share which ruler I used where, is so you can see the benefits of having a great selection of circle rulers and curve rulers. I lay out my circle rulers to see which curve fits in the best spot. No two quilts are the same. It’s such a great asset to have a great set of rulers.

Front/back!! Love it! You can also see the hook on the swirls in the bottom picture. I love the look of the diamonds in each corner.

I wish each of you could see this beautiful quilt!!

Lovely sunlight highlighting all that quilting texture.

These sweet butterflies were made by Lori for her granddaughter. The pattern is by Nadra Ridgeway from Ellis & Higgs and is called Butterfly Dance.

This is such a sweet sweet quilt!!

Lori chose Flower Child by Apricot Moon Designs, and it’s available at Urban Elementz. This is such a fun design to quilt. It looks like the flowers are dancing along with the butterflies.

I used a 30 tex Silver Omni thread from Superior Threads, and 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline.

I hope you have fun snuggling your new granddaughter soon, Lori!!! She’s lucky to receive such a beautiful quilt.

I love this bright fun runner, made by Laurie. The pattern is Mini Popsicles Table Runner and is available at Annie’s Catalog.

I custom quilted this with overlapping swirls in the background, and a variety of fun textures in the popsicles.

Such a fun summery runner. I used Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Laurie brought a cotton poly batting scrap.

This house quilt is just so fun, it was made by Kara Jo. The bold reds, pinks, and oranges…next to the black and white low volume prints…make this quilt pop!! I’m guessing these red/pink/orange fabrics are by Kaffe.

I used a Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 cotton poly batting.

Look at the combination of these bold prints, even next to some of the bold low volume prints. Such a fun combo.

I’m not sure who this pattern is by, if I find out I will edit this post. There are a fun variety of house quilts.

I suggested Malachite as a design for this quilt, and Kara Jo agreed. It’s by Patricia Ritter and is available at Urban Elementz. I love it with the variety and style of these fabrics. It’s such a versatile design.

That quilty texture is just so so good.

Lastly…this absolutely cute quilt, made by Sherry. It’s called Ghost Quilt by Then Came June. She has some pretty fun quilt patterns.

I’m not a huge Halloween fan, but this quilt just might change my mind. I love the different colors of ghost eyes and mouth. Light grey to black.

I stewed and stewed on how to quilt this. I saw a couple quilted that I liked, but one was custom and I knew I wanted to do something edge to edge. So I took a look at Sarah Ann Myers designs at Urban Elementz, because some of my favorites are hers, and I found Gale. The movement in this design, is just my favorite!!! It quilted beautifully!!

I used a white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

I think the point in the Gale quilting design, goes so well with the point on the ghost. That’s why I love them together.

I can’t believe it’s that time of year, when Halloween quilts are starting to get quilted. Anyone else feel like this year has flown right by.

The ghosts seem to be glowing in the picture below.

What have you been sewing this summer??? I’ve been making great progress on my Hexie Flower quilt, that I’ve been sewing together by hand…for the last 4 years. I shared a picture of a couple of the rows, a few posts ago. Right now, all the rows are sewn, and I’m starting to sew them together. That definitely takes more time, but it’s finally starting to look like a quilt. It’s been such a fun project. (Previous picture, so you don’t have to go looking for it)

Also, my Modern Vintage quilt is finally getting quilted!!!! Yay! It’s a pattern by Bonnie and Camille, and is in Bonnie’s Cotton Way Classics book. I used several different charm packs from several different Bonnie and Camille lines of fabric, to make this quilt. I’m so excited!! I’m going to quilt my Sweet Orange Peel©️ design on it, and it has a layer of Hobbs wool inside. This quilt was started almost two years ago. Yes, I’m slow at sewing. I prefer it that way. Take my time and enjoy the process.

Thanks for sticking around. I know that is a whole lot of pictures and quilts. But I love seeing a variety of ideas • for quilts and quilting. I hope you enjoy it, too. Happy sewing! • Leisha

This is one of Molly’s designs, Luck O’ The Irish.  Follow the link to my shop above to see her other fun designs.

Also, a quick reminder that my 20% off of Flexi Fuse expires on Sunday as well.  Use code “leishakaye” at checkout: https://flexifuse.com/?ref:leisha

If you do any kind of appliqué, you need to try this interfacing.  As a machine quilter I hate trying to quilt through appliqué, not the case when it comes to Flexi Fuse.  Quilts like a breeze.  I’m excited to make some things of my own.

Now onto the giveaway!!!  This giveaway is HUGE!  I haven’t blogged about it just yet.  I have joined with some pretty amazing sponsors to offer one lucky winner a prize worth more than $800.  I’m including a $100 gift card for machine quilting!!  There are several ways to enter, check here for all the details:  http://www.flexifusegiveaway.com/

Please stop by and visit each of our Instagram accounts.  Mine is @leishakaye and there is also @sistersandquilters (my favorite online fabric shop), @flexiefuse, @rilerblakedesigns, @kimberbelldesigns, @aurifil, and @tiedwitharibbon

This giveaway ends the 6th of July.  The prize package includes thread, patterns, fabric, fusible webbing, quilting, and a light box.

Now for the amazing quilts that I’ve been able to quilt lately!!

Laurel from @snowberrystreet (on Instagram) messaged me and asked if I would quilt her Madame Butterfly quilt, pattern by Vanessa Goertzen from Lella Boutique.  These are also Vanessa’s fabrics.  I was so excited!!  Seriously, this quilt is gorgeous!

Laurel asked for the antenna’s, and then left the rest up to me.  I love what Natalia Bonner did when she quilted Vanessa’s, by out lining around the butterflies 1/4”.  I did the same on this quilt, which makes the butterflies pop!!  I used my favorite Edge ruler from Linda at www.thequiltedpineapple.com • I also used those same Edge rulers to quilt my favorite pinstriped border.  1/4” for the thin stripe and 1” for the wider stripe.

I quilted most of the butterflies the same.  Same circles and swirls alternating on the body, feathers and swirls on the inside wings, ribbon candy on the outside tips of the wings, however the inside of the wings differs on each of the butterflies on each row.  I chose four different designs, and then just alternated them throughout the quilt, making sure each design ends up in each column.  I will share each of those below.  You’ll also notice the feathers/swirls for the antenna’s.

On this first butterfly I quilted overlapping circles on that middle layer of the wings.

Next, you know I love mixing hard lines with the softness of the pebbles, swirls, and ribbon candy.  So above is a 1/4” pin stripe, and below a 1/4” stripe going the opposite direction on the left wing, than the right wing.

Lastly, I love a good grassy texture (what I like to call it) on that middle layer of the wings, pictured below.

I hope you also noticed the variety of filler with the pebbles...swirls, echoes, overlapping circles, arcs and so on, in the background.  A great way to make everything pop!

I used White 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 batting for this quilt.  I quilted everything, except the lines, freehand.  Quilts like this, with so much incredible texture, are just my favorite.

Next up, this sweet baby quilt made by Maria.  I love a simple pinwheel quilt like this!!  Especially with mint, pink, peach and coral fabrics.

I used Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 batting on this quilt.

Maria asked for a simple Orange Peel design to be quilted on it.  I used my 6” Circle2™, machine quilting Circle2™ ruler, to quilt it.  My Circle2™ set of rulers is available in my shop....and is a great addition to every quilting studio.  They come in a set of 6 and range in size 2”-13”.  Like I mentioned above, they are $20 off right now until Sunday, use code “CIRCLE2™ “ at checkout.  Watch here to see my rulers in action.  https://youtu.be/GWyDTymyzoE and are available here: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop

I love a simple Orange Peel!

A couple of close ups!!!

Kristin made this for her son who just turned 8!  I love a simple quilt, yet striking because of the solid colors.

I don’t know the pattern name to this quilt, I bet the squares are around 6 inches and the rectangles 3”x6”, sewn.  Add the 1/2” for seam allowance when cutting, and you’ll be good.

Kristin wanted simple 1” lines.  I used my favorite 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline and white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread.

I quilt on a Gammill 22” machine, with a Statler Stitcher.  This one and the next quilt, we’re done by the Statler (computer).  However the first two quilts in this post, I quilted myself.  It’s great to have both options.

This next quilt was made by Kara Jo or her daughter.  Or maybe they made it together.  Her daughter loves Star Wars, and has wanted a t-shirt quilt.

Initially we talked about possibly doing a Star Wars design, for the quilting.  When I couldn’t find one that I loved.  They decided on Diagonal Plaid, by Patricia Ritter from https://www.urbanelementz.com/?acc=12 and I’m glad they did.  I don’t like doing the same kind of design on the same quilt, it’s just too much.  I still want the design to compliment the quilt, but not be so matchy matchy or literal.

I used my favorite 8020 cotton poly blend batting and Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread to quilt this.

The block below is cool!!  It’s two shirts sewn together.  I do suggest when making a shirt quilt, that you iron the interfacing on really well.  Especially when the shirts are a little thin.  Otherwise the hopping foot can possibly cause a pucker, if the shirt starts to stretch.  I have a spoon foot, but it’s difficult to mark the quilt as I advance the rows.  So I prefer using my regular hopping foot.

Thanks for being here and reading through all of that.  If you’d rather listen to my blog posts, click on the link at the end of the email that says read in browser, and then it should take you to my post.  At the top of the post is a little sound icon.  Click on that and you can listen while you sew.  When I listen on my phone, it says to click here because my browser doesn’t support the audio.  Click on that and it works great!  Have a great week!

Quilts & a Prickly Pillow!

Hello Quilty Friends,

Hope you’ve been well!  It’s about time that I share with you some of the things I’ve been quilting lately...

Starting with this super fun cactus pillow.  I mean seriously!!!  Love this!!  If you’ve followed along for a little while, then you’ve probably seen some other pillows I’ve quilted recently.  This is another pillow from the pillow of the month club that My Girlfriends Quilt Shoppe, here is Logan Utah, has available.  This was last months pillow.  Go to their website to contact them about a pattern or kit: https://mygirlfriendsquiltshoppe.com/

This one was made by Sherry!!

I knew I wanted to do this line design for the background, it just adds such a cool texture.  I used my favorite Edge rulers from Linda at https://thequiltedpineapple.bigcartel.com/

I also wanted to add some more movement to the quilting in the cactus’ themselves...between the grassy freehand design and ribbon candy (shown above), I think it looks awesome!

Some overlapping circles on this, play on the round shape of this one.

Sherry brought a scrap piece of batting, I’m assuming it was an 8020 cotton poly blend batting and I used the white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread.

A little wood grain in this one...which I love!  It fits the style of the pillow.  It’s fun that something so little can have such a punch.

Next up...this gorgeous quilt made by Chris for her daughter and soon to be son in-law’s wedding.  Chris makes the most thoughtful, beautiful, and perfectly pieces quilts.

This quilt has a backing that is perfect for their wedding guests to sign.  It will be such a treasure.

I used my favorite 8020 Winline batting and Antique Cream A&E 30 tex Perma Core thread.  I also used one of Linda’s Edge rulers to quilt all the cross hatching lines.  In the center of the heart and on the border.

Kind of hard to see, because the thread blends so well, but I quilted a feather design on the blue heart.  Some of which you can see along the sides at the top.  Then I repeated the same design on the outer border.  Then I just freehand pebbles the rest of it, in a variety of different sizes of circles.

I just love all these quilting designs together.  Quilting adds so much dimension to every quilt.  The quilt pattern is called Family Heart Quilt by Sweet On Stitches on Etsy.  It can be found here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/225771503/heart-quilt-pattern-wedding-family-new?ref=shop_home_active_1&crt=1  Chris altered it a little, too.

Chris also made this for a girl who just graduated high school.  She loved these fabrics long ago, and so Chris thought she would love them in a graduation quilt.  If I remember right, the pattern is Turning 20.

Chris is a master at picking out quilt designs.  She usually comes with an idea of how she wants it quilted, by looking at my machine quilting options here:  https://www.quiltingit.com/machine-quilting-options-1  She picked this Moxie design, and it goes so well with these Verona fabrics from Riley Blake.

I used Dyed Natural 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread, and 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline.

There is definitely a place for edge to edge quilting.  I’ve heard people say that it’s cheating or there is no creativity involved when it comes to edge to edge designs.  I think there is plenty of creativity when matching designs to the quilt.

Even more creativity for me, because this is one of Patricia Ritter and my designs, it’s called Moxie©️ design.  It’s available at Urban Elementz:  https://www.urbanelementz.com/moxie.html

A close up and angled shot of all that fun texture!!

Next up!!!  Denise made this amazing farm house quilt.  I think she told me it’s one of Lori Holt’s quilt patterns, Farm Girl Vintage.  Amazing huh?!?!?!!

Denise, her husband, and kiddos live on a farm...so she personalized some of the blocks to match their farm.  Even some of the animals names are embroidered on the blocks.

If you notice, there isn’t a ton of machine quilting.  I quilted the outside border, one of the inside borders, and the sashing.  Now Denise is going to hand quilt each of the blocks.  I can wait to see the hand quilting and machine quilting combo, I think it’s such a fun idea!

I used my favorite Edge rulers from Linda, to quilt the on point cross hatching.  I pebbled the inside border and then quilted leaves inside the sashing.  Love the combination of the 3.  Great choices, Denise!!

I used Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and 8020 cotton blend batting.

Here are a couple of my favorites!!

Next up, this beautiful quilt made by Sherry!  Sherry used to be one of my leaders at church when I was 16.  She and some other women would teach us lessons on Sunday and plan fun activities for us on Tuesday, all done out of service.  Now, that’s something I get to do.  Which makes me so grateful for what they did for me.  So, you can imagine how fun it was to see her again, and get to quilt for her.  She made a quilt for her daughter, that I’ve already shared, however this one is for her.  It was the first quilt she’s ever made!!

I shared the progress of this on Instagram and there were some who asked what the pattern was...it’s called the bullseye block.  If you google it, you can find tutorials.  I recently found this video tutorial:  https://youtu.be/zDFdTe9d4Vc

I quilted a bullseye quilt in the past year or so, and this is how I quilted it.  Pebbles and swirls.  It is definitely time consuming, but I love it!!

I love the mixture of corals and mint, with s touch of gold.  You can’t tell from the pictures, but she used a variety of different low volume or tone on tone whites for the backgrounds.

I used my 5” Circle2™ machine quilting circle ruler to quilt the petals in the bullseye.  If you follow me along on Instagram, you may have seen me sharing how I rotate the ruler while quilting.  If not, go to @leishakaye on Instagram and check out my highlight bubble on my profile page, and watch the Circle2™ Rulers highlight.  My rulers are available in a set of 6 on my website, click here: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop?category=Rulers

I do want to give you a heads up!!  This weekend I’m going to have a sale on my Circle2™ Rulers and digital designs, so be watching for that announcement.

I just love angled shots, it shows off the quilting so beautifully.

I quilted some ribbon candy in the border and some swirly feathers in the outside border, a perfect frame for this quilt.

Lastly, I recently made this for a friend who’s daughter graduated from high school!

The embroidered blocks were done by a local shop, called the Logo Shop.

I gathered all the fabrics from https://www.sistersandquilters.com/ online store.  They also have an Etsy: https://www.etsy.com/shop/SistersandQuilters  They have such an incredible variety and selection of high quality fabrics and notions.

My mom finished off the binding for me!!  She’s the best!

I used Soho by Sarah Ann Myers to quilt it, and it’s available at https://www.urbanelementz.com/?acc=12

This design is seriously one of my favorites!!

I backed it with Shannon Fabrics navy embossed dot.

Thanks for sticking around seeing what’s happening in my little quilting world.

I also recently started putting together my hexie flower quilt.  Here are the first two of 17 rows.  I started this almost 4 years ago.  It’s fun to finally start seeing it come together.  It may take me another long while to see it together.  This is called English Paper Piecing, and I had a friend teach me how to glue and then baste.  I’m sure there are some great tutorials out there on how to do this.  Do a google search and find a method you like.

Happy Wednesday!!  - Leisha

Shelley’s Pixelated Heart Quilt!

(This post was written awhile back, and was meant to be shared elsewhere.  When that didn’t work out, I knew I wanted to share it here...enjoy!!)

I’m so grateful I get to do what I do!!  My sweet as they come client, Shelley, made this for one of her friends who has cancer and is going through chemo. This is when quilts and quilting mean far more to me.  Being able to machine quilt something that is bringing warmth and love to someone during a difficult time, is such a gift and a privilege.  I hope her friend finds healing and is on the road to recovery soon.

If you’ve been on Instagram and you follow quilters, you may have seen this pixelated heart quilt. It’s been everywhere lately. Judith Hollies from Just Jude Designs is selling this pattern on her Etsy. I’m loving the scrappy look to this quilt, from the low volume background to the reds and pinks in all different varieties of prints.

Some of my clients look on my website www.quiltingit.com to see which edge to edge machine quilting designs I have available, unless they request custom quilting which I do free motion.  Shelley came with a few ideas, which is great!!  I appreciate it when they help me narrow it down to what they like.  However, after I saw this quilt I showed her our Cupid©️ design.  This design is by Patricia Ritter and myself, and it’s available in paper and several different digital formats at https://www.urbanelementz.com/cupid.html  She said yes!!  I was excited.  I’ve quilted this particular design out once or twice, and each time it’s just one of my very favorites, and I think it’s a perfect fit for this quilt.

When I pick a quilting design, I take into consideration everything about the quilt. The fabric prints, the textures, the quilt pattern, and so on. I often draw inspiration from a quilt, like I did with Shelley, and I just know when I look at it what will look great. Other times I have to think about it for awhile. When deciding on the quilting design, I often choose something that will complement the quilt without it being the exact same design. For example I don’t love to quilt flowers on a quilt that has flower quilt blocks and flower fabrics. I think that’s when the quilting can compete with the quilt. In that case I would rather choose something with leaves or a geometric design. I feel like quilting isn’t supposed to be the focus of a quilt, rather the focus should be the quilt as a whole. Everything, fabrics...pattern...and quilting. If done right each part is complimentary to each other. Now, you may be smiling. I quilted hearts on a heart quilt. Yes, however not every fabric on this quilt has hearts on it. That’s why quilting hearts works. Cupid enhanced the hard edges on the giant pixelated heart, and softened it up quite a bit. I also love to soften the hard lines on a quilt by doing curvy or swirly designs for the quilting. My best advice, be inspired by the quilt. Everything about it. You never know, you may be inspired to do something amazing, by just thinking outside the box. Urban Elementz has an incredible selection of quilting designs from a wide variety of designers, I recommend choosing a variety of different designs that will look beautiful on a variety of different quilts.

The swirls in this design add great movement, and almost dance across the quilt. I also love the texture that quilting adds to a quilt. You can see pictured below the difference of the design on the beautiful red, and the softness of the cream background.

I used Dyed Natural A&E 30 tex Perma Core thread, which is the most lovely creamy color of thread, on the front and back. I also used Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting. Which is a perfect combo, with this super soft Cuddle™️ (minky) backing. Cuddle is the brand name for Shannon Fabrics minky. This particular one, was one of their 90” wide minky’s. I love the 90” for those quilts that are too big for the 60” minky.

I’d like to mention something about plush quilt backings, like minky or Cuddle.  I prefer the solid minky with no textures or prints or embossing, 10 times out of 10.  The reason being, the quilting you’re paying good money to have done, can be your texture.  I mean look how absolutely beautiful our Cupid design is on this Cuddle.  With the textured or printed minky’s, they compete with the quilting, and you miss the texture the quilting gives the quilt.  What you really want the quilting to do is enhance your quilt, front and back.  I’ve often heard that quilting is like the icing on the cake.  If you love those textured minky’s, great!!  Go for it!  For me, I’ll just be over here swooning over those swirly hearts.

Thank you for spending your time with me today! In the future, I’d like to share with you my thoughts on the size/scale of a design.  Until then, I hope your quilting journey is a happy one.  I love creating designs that you love to use.  I for one am excited to see what  we can continue to do together in the future.  Happy quilting!!

Have a great day!!

Quilts...quilts...quilts!

Hello Quilting Friends,

Hope that your week has been a great one!   I told you last time that I have some fun quilts to share with you...so here goes!

First up, this lovely quilt made by Beth, using the Mini Metro Rings pattern from Sew Kind of Wonderful.  If you haven’t and you’d like to try a curved quilt, take a look at Sew Kind of Wonderful’s pattern selection.  I’ve made a couple of their patterns, and they make sewing a curve easy peasy!!

Beth used mostly Porcelain by 3 Sisters fabrics, from Moda fabrics.

This quilt is small, and yet oh so lovely.  So fun to custom quilt.  I used Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Beth provided a batting...I think it was bamboo.

I used my 3” and 9” Circle2™ machine quilting circle ruler to quilt the curves, except for the curve just inside of all the circles.  I used a -10- curve ruler from Linda at www.thequiltedpineapple.com

My machine quilting circle ruler set, Circle2™, comes in a set of 6 ranging from 2”-14” circles.  My sets are available in green or clear acrylic, on my website: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop?category=Rulers

Here is more info about my rulers:  https://www.quiltingit.com/blog/2018/10/10/introducing-my-circle2-longarm-circle-ruler-set

These rulers are such a versatile set.  Because they range in size from 2”-13”, that gives me a wide variety of options for curves.

I quilted a diamond shape, with lines 1/4” apart in the center.  I freehand quilted swirls with a little tale, inside the “rings”.  Pebbles and a little curve inside the rings, make the rings pop!!  I love the combination all together.

Here is a great look at the backing.  The backing is a minky, so the texture is lovely!!

Next up...Sherry’s Wagon Wheel quilt.  This is a classic quilt block.  Do a google search, I’m sure you’ll find a tutorial.

the black and white fabrics are so striking together!!

I used white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 batting for this quilt.

I gave Sherry a few options for quilting designs, and she chose my Beaded Clam Take 2, which is available on my website as well as Urban Elementz.  Go here: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop/beaded-clam-take-2 or here: https://www.urbanelementz.com/beaded-clam.html

We chose this design to soften the hard lines of the quilt blocks, and it goes well with the fabric prints.

Look at all that fun quilty texture!!

I quilted this with my Gammill 22” Statler longarm machine.  All of the other quilts and runners I quilted freehand or free motion.

Here is a look at the quilt backing.  Love it!!!

Next up...this absolutely stunning quilt made by Joleene!!!  Joleene is the mastermind behind the Sew Red Glasses.

Joleene made this one of a kind quilt to represent the last few years of her life.  Family, friends, faith, service, her Sew Res Glasses and so on.  Beautiful!!  I love the red and white!!

When I quilt a custom quilt like this, I want the designs to flow throughout.  You’ll notice orange peels, crosshatching, overlapping circles, diagonal lines, circles, and so on.  I try and replicate a design in multiple spots to compliment the quilting designs and help the eye travel throughout the quilt.  I love how this one turned out.

Here are some of my favorite blocks...first up, these 4” red stars were throughout the quilt. I thought the quilting on these were perfect to make the stars pop.  I used my 2” Circle2™ machine quilting circle ruler to quilt the curves, and an Edge ruler from Linda at www.thequiltedpinapple.com

I also love this star!!!  If I remember right I used the 12” and 6” Circle2™ rulers to quilt the curves in the corners.  Then I just echoed the Star with some simple lines.

On this block I used 4 different rulers...the Edge ruler, and 3 different sizes of Circle2™ rulers.  It might have used the 3”, 6”, and 13” circles to create all the curves.  I remember using the 13” circle, but I’m guessing I used the 3” and 6” for the smaller curves.  I actually ended up using 5 of the 6 rulers in my set, to quilt this quilt!!  I didn’t use the 5”/11” ruler.  Which is a great example of the versatility of this set of circle rulers.  I’m also loving how nicely they fit in my hand as I quilt.

Okay...those apples are too cute!!

Here is a look at the amazing quilt backing Joleen pieced.  Cute, huh?!?!?!!  I used white 30 tex thread, and Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

Here is a quick look at the clear set of my Circle2™ rulers.  For more info or to purchase a set, go to: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop?category=Rulers

Here is a look at the smallest ruler, the 2”/8”. I designed them with the 1/4” hopping foot in mind.  If you were to quilt a 2” circle, you would get a 2” circle.  Not a 2.5” circle, like I’ve seen happen with other circle rulers.

Below is a look at the largest circle, 7”/13”.  Check the link above to see a the other sizes.  I’m loving seeing what your creating with these rulers.  Please use the hashtag #circle2rulers on instagram, if you post pictures.  I’d love to see them and share them.  Thank you!!!

Next up, Barbara made these two lovely table runners.

This pattern is actually a quilt pattern by Down Grapevine Lane and is called Tumbleweeds Quilt, and she just made a runner.

I decided to quilt a variety of different designs to create some fun texture.  Overlapping circles (video here: https://youtu.be/x0UNyEJdm9Y), swirls, ribbon candy, lines, feathers, and such!!

I love these fabrics with this pattern, so fun!!

I used white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread, and Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

And this lovely little runner is a pattern by Kim Diehl and is called Simple Whatnot’s 8.

I used a coordinating teal thread for the border, and a nice cream colored 30 tex thread, Dyed Natural, from A&E.  I also used Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

I freehand quilted a swirl feather in the center of the quilt, ribbon candy in the blue borders, and circles in the thin 1/2” cream border.  Then I quilted a fun loopy freehand design in the 9 patches on the corners.

These fabrics are also from Kim Diehl.

I nice close up.  Quilting just adds so much personality to a quilt, I love it!!

Thank you for stopping by!  Have a great weekend!!

Make Yourself at Home + Pillows

Hope you’ve had a great week!!  I spent most of mine with my baby sister and her husband moving and decorating their new townhome.  It was so much fun!!  I graduated in interior design, even though I fill my work time with quilting, it’s great to do some decorating every once in awhile.

So, I don’t have much to share with you in this week’s post.  A wall hanging and some pillow fronts.  I did freehand and or free-motion quilt them all.  I do have lots of pictures!

First up...this amazing quilt made by Jeanenne!!  It’s called Make Yourself at Home by Kimberbell Designs.  This pattern, like several of Kim’s patterns, is available in a machine embroidery or hand embroidery option.  Jeanenne did the machine embroidery version.

My goal with the quilting on quilts like this, is to create lots of different textures that compliment one another.  Curves, pebbles, lines, ribbon candy, leaves with swirls, and grassy texture.  Love it all together!!

My favorite texture has to be the 1/2” inch random angular lines in the border.  I just love doing that on a border.  It makes such a statement.  I used Edge rulers from Linda at The Quilted Pineapple, to quilt the lines.  I did a video tutorial on quilting out these lines awhile back.  Head here to check it out: https://youtu.be/m5UXfRD_ujY

Its also a great way to fill a large border, or random borders and sashing like I did in the video.

Aren’t all those different angles so fun!!  Yes, I do them randomly.  No need to mark anything, just vary the angles from the ones you’ve already quilted.

I used my 4” and 10” Circle2™ (said...Circle Squared) rulers on the star blocks, pinwheels, the green quilt block, and the circular design in the 4 patch.  My Circle2™ (machine quilting circle rulers) are so versatile.  Let your creativity run...and you’ll create some amazing designs with them.

My Circle2™ rulers are only available in my shop in a set of 6 ranging in size from 2”-13”:  https://www.quiltingit.com/shop  For more info on them, check out this post: https://www.quiltingit.com/blog/2018/10/10/introducing-my-circle2-longarm-circle-ruler-set  They are available in green and clear, high quality 1/4” acrylic.  They can be used on a longarm or on a sewing machine with a quilting foot.

Aren’t all those textures great together?!?!?!!!  And below is a closer look at the fun design I quilted in the 4 patch.

I decided on a windy background for the trees...and if wind is anything like it is here, it’s going in all different directions.  Wind is fun to freehand quilt...here is another video on my YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/qsLJOyP62sc

I’m trying to share enough pictures, so you can see all the great designs together.  That overlapping swirl design, behind the lamp, is also a favorite of mine.  Go to this video to see how I quilt out this design:  https://youtu.be/x0UNyEJdm9Y

When I quilt a design on a quilt like this, I try to do it again at least once if not twice.  By doing so it makes the designs compliment one another and helps your eye travel as you look at it.

I used my favorite 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline, and Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread on the entire quilt.

I don’t like to quilt a ton inside the appliqués...the couches on this quilt got no quilting at all...yet I quilted the pot on the plants and doors on the house above.  My rule of thumb for quilting in appliqué pieces, only do it if they need it.  If they aren’t laying flat or are too big, I definitely quilt something, even if it’s just simple lines.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this quilt!!  It’s definitely a fun quilt.

Next up...pillows!!  Lots of them!  I actually sewed the backs together in one long piece, because they weren’t big enough to pin to the machine.  It’s also faster to quilt them all on one backing.  Below you are looking at 7 pillow fronts all in one piece because of the backings being sewn together.   I just center the pillow front on the backing, so the seam doesn’t end up on the back of the pillow.  Sherry will cut them on the seam, so then she can trim them.

These are part of the pillow of the month kits that My Girlfriends Quilt Shoppe has been doing for the past 8 months.  They may still have some of the kits available, if not, I’m sure they have the patterns.  Here is their website: https://mygirlfriendsquiltshoppe.com/

These were made by Sherry.  A lot of these pillows will get more dimensional items added to them now that they are quilted.

Pebbles, swirls, and feathers for the background with a ribbon candy border.

She brought batting scraps for each of these, I think it’s an 8020 cotton poly blend.  I used a white and a navy 30 tex Perma Core thread on this one, from A&E.

Next a cute witch hat!  This one is quite simple, so creating great texture was important.  I did that same line design, that I did on the border of the quilt above, on the brim of the hat.  Add some crackle, 1/2” angled lines, 1/2” squares in the spider body, and ribbon candy sashing...a great combination!  I used black and Antique Cream 30 tex Perma Core thread from A&E.

A closer look at the angled lines on the brim.

And squares on the spider.

Next the Valentine pillow.  This one will have ribbons, like a bouquet of heart balloons.

Different quilty textures in the hearts with the pebbles in the background, add interest to this pillow.  Bordering it with ribbon candy.

Next up...this cute gnome Santa!!  He’s my favorite of the bunch.  Sherry made four of these, which makes 7 pillow fronts in total.

I quilted that same freehand overlapping circle design in this background, link to the video is above. (With the lamp on the quilt). I added some vertical lines at 1/2”, in the hat and angled lines in the body.  The beard has a wavy design and nothing is needed for the nose and the shoes.

The border has a repeat of these three designs, down both sides.

I used Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread on all 4 of these pillows.

For those who are wondering I have a $35 minimum, and so each of these pillows are $35 to quilt.

I’m off to quilt another quilt!!  I have some fun quilts to quilt in the next few weeks, that I’m excited to share with you.  Have a great weekend!!

Quilts Quilts Quilts!!

Happy weekend to you!!  Hope you’ve had a great week!

I’m excited to share these amazing quilts with you!!  First up...my mom’s amazing Apple Pie in the Sky quilt!  My mom and aunt Kristin own www.sistersandquilters.com and awhile back my aunt created a tutorial on their blog for a quilt called Apple Pie in the Sky.  Go here to check it out: http://sistersandquilters.blogspot.com/2013/04/apple-pie-in-sky-sampler-quilt-along.html?m=1

Kristin shared 13 blocks and some amazing time saving/fabric saving tips!!  My mom decided to make hers queen size and do 42 blocks.  There currently is not a pattern for the rest of the blocks, would that be something you’re interested in?  Comment below and I’ll pass it along to them.

Also, if you’re looking for an excellent selection of fabrics go to: https://www.etsy.com/shop/SistersandQuilters and https://www.sistersandquilters.com/

Isn’t this amazing?!?!!!!

The benefit of having your own quilt shop, you can pick and choose fabrics from different designers or lines, and put them together.  Which is what she did here.

This quilt hung in my closet for a year, my mom just hadn’t decided what she wanted.  So, I pulled it out a couple weeks ago and told her it was time to decide.  We had talked about doing my On Point©️ crosshatch design, however I asked her what she thought of me quilting my Sweet Orange Peel©️ design...she said she was thinking the same thing.  I’m so glad that’s what I quilted, it looks beautiful!!  Sweet Orange Peel is available only in my shop at https://www.quiltingit.com/shop/sweet-orange-peel

I quilted this design at a 4” height on my Gammill 22” Statler.  This design does not need to be offset at all.

Now I’m going to share a closer look with you of all 42 blocks.  Because this quilt is laid out as 6x7 blocks, and I’m showing them to you in sets of four, you will see some repeat blocks.

-

These happen to be my two favorite blocks!!!

I used Winline’s 8020 cotton/poly king size batting for this quilt.  I also used 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread in Antique Cream color.  It is the perfect off white cream color.

Please comment below if you’re interested in a pattern.  Who knows, maybe they’ll do a quilt along again!!!

Next up...a quilt my sister made for her husband!!

He wanted a plaid quilt, which also looked checkered to me.

I love the arrow fabric they chose to go with the red and Moda cross weave grey.  They got these fabrics from https://www.sistersandquilters.com/

I gave them a few options, and they chose my Up and Down©️ design, for the quilting.  It’s available only in my shop at:  https://www.quiltingit.com/shop/up-and-down

I used the same Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and king size 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline.

They chose the same Moda cross weave for the backing.  Which I think they will LOVE!

Next up... Denise’s incredible Inter Woven quilt, pattern is by Lo and Behold Stitchery.  I love the colors that she chose!!  So cool!

I used a white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

Denise wanted something soft and curvy, to soften all those hard lines.  So I sent her a few options and she chose Soho by Sarah Ann Myers.  It’s available at Urban Elementz go to: https://www.urbanelementz.com/soho.html

I love this quilting design!!  It’s so versatile.  I’ve used it so much, definitely a favorite.

Seriously so impressed with this quilt!!  I want to make one now.

Next up... Pat’s plaid Disappearing Four Patch.  Its a pattern by Missouri Star Quilt Co.  and Jenny has done a YouTube tutorial on it here: https://youtu.be/jA-10A_Uc6k

This is my most favorite Disappearing 4 Patch that I’ve seen.  I love this size of the blocks, and I love love the plaid fabrics.

I used the same 30 tex A&E Perma Core Antique Cream thread and 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline.

I suggested Patricia Ritter and my Kindling©️ design for the quilting and I think it turned out great.  I seriously love this wood grain texture.  Kindling is available at Urban Elementz go here: https://www.urbanelementz.com/kindling.html

A few different pictures just to see all that incredible texture.

I also want to point out how well the Cream thread blends on all of these different fabrics.

Of course we all love the great texture that shows up on a quilt back...

For a look at all of my designs that are available on Urban Elementz go here: https://www.urbanelementz.com/catalogsearch/result/index/?cat=0&p=1&q=Leisha+Farnsworth

Thanks for taking time to check out what I’m making or sewing...actually, I should share the sewing caddy I made on Tuesday of this week...

Isn’t it amazing!!  I can say amazing, because I’m a quilt maker.  Every time that I reach outside my wheelhouse and make something, I learn so much.  This pattern is called Catch All Caddy from Patterns by Annie, it’s available here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/623810801/catch-all-caddy-pba-225-bag-patterns-by?ga_search_query=Catch%2Ball%2Bcaddy&ref=shop_items_search_1&frs=1

For the base she suggests foam core or cardboard.  However, we have tons of old cutting mats, so a friend cut some down for us.  Once I get that put in, I’ll fill this up.  So excited!!!  I’ve wanted to make this for a couple of years, and we finally got together with friends and made it happen.

Annie has a 1/4” foam that you use, it’s called Soft and Stable, it’s available here: https://www.etsy.com/listing/609969032/by-annie-soft-stable-72x58-wh-s-s2072?ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=soft+and+stable&ref=sr_gallery-1-1&organic_search_click=1&frs=1

And it’s a breeze to sew with or quilt.  I actually loaded my fabrics on the gammill and quilted them.

I used my 1” Grid©️ design to quilt a large piece, and then went back and cut them down to the sizes required.  It’s only available here:  https://www.quiltingit.com/shop/1-grid

A quick note...the fabric and foam shrunk about 1” .  Annie includes that inch in the requirements for fabric to be quilted.

Hope you have a great weekend!!  Happy quilting!  -Leisha

Client Quilts and Easter Runner...

Hope your week is off to a good start!!  Here are a few things I had the privilege of quilting last week.

First up, this fun wall hanging made and kitted by Laser Cut Quilts!  You may remember me sharing a quilt like this last fall in their kit release for Quilt Market.  This time, I quilted the car differently.  So, I thought I’d share it again.

I quilted this quilt all free motion or freehand.  Free motion means that I am guiding the machine.  I did use Edge rulers from Linda at thequiltedpineapple.com for all of the lines.

In my classes I preach, “keep your quilting as clean or neat as possible”.  That it’s better to stop and start your thread over, than to travel and add tons of more thread to the quilt.  That’s how I like to quilt.  However, I recently saw this pebble quilting done by some other quilters, where they went around the circle a few times.  Which I’ve done here.  The reason behind it, it adds greater definition to the quilting, and lets it pop that much more.  Especially because the batting I used here is just my regular favorite, Winline 8020 cotton poly blend.  It definitely added extra texture. I only did the extra stitches in the pebbling, everything else is done neat and clean.

I used a lovely cream Perma Core 30 tex thread from A&E for the background.  My favorite colors of cream are Antique Cream and Dyed Natural...I think I used the Dyed Natural on this one.  I used a bright red thread for the truck, green for the trees, and dark grey for the road.

I also want to take a moment to share more about Laser Cut Quilts new fusible interfacing, Flexi Fuse.  As you can see there are multiple layers of appliqué pieces on this quilt.  The wonderful thing about their fusible, is the softness of it...even with those multiple layers.  I noticed the machine needle doesn’t leave those big holes like it does with other interfacing, and also I can actually quilt and have it not feel like I’m dragging the machine.  Check out those tiny circles in the tire rim above.  They were easy to freehand quilt...even with multiple layers.  So for your next appliqué project, give Flexi Fuse a try, you’ll be happy with the results.  Go to their website for more info: https://flexifuse.com/

Okay, how cute is this bunny runner?!?!?!!!  I think it’s one of my very favorite Easter anything, that I’ve quilted.  It’s made by Barbara!

The pattern is Country Bunnies by Margot Languedoc from The Pattern Basket, and it’s available here: http://www.thepatternbasket.com/catalog.htm?item=234

Here are some close ups...  I love the little tail.  I used Linda’s Edge ruler to quilt these 1/2” squares.  Once again, I love mixing hard lines with soft curves in the custom quilting that I do.  It creates texture and definition.

To frame the blocks, I quilted ribbon candy in the sashing.  I did a 45° angled line in the background and a swirly feather in the bunny.

1/2” horizontal lines and pebbles.

1/2” lines going the opposite direction and overlapping circles inside the bunny.  I share how to quilt this design on my YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/x0UNyEJdm9Y

It’s fun to add all these different details, and yet they compliment each other so well.  I used Antique Cream 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread on each part of this runner, and 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

Next up...

My aunt Kristin, who is half of the www.sistersandquilters.com team, made these for her two grandsons.  These turned out sooo cute.  The fabric is Mighty Machine’s by Lydia Nelson from Moda.  They have some charm packs still available on their Etsy.  www.sistersandquilters.etsy.com

I actually quilted two of these, and cut one very long minky backing.  It’s easier when smaller quilts are the same size, to quilt them on one backing.

On this close up, you’ll notice that the border around the square is even all the way around.  The strips are the same size.  Kristin is going to do a blog post on Sisters & Quilters blog, once she gets the quilts finished.  Check their blog here for that future post.  http://sistersandquilters.blogspot.com/?m=1

Kristin picked my Crosshatch©️ digital quilting design for the quilting.  This is actually how the design looks before you offset it 50%, which made the perfect tire track look.  Go to my shop here to get this design, and to see what the design looks like offset.  https://www.quiltingit.com/shop/crosshatch

I quilted this design at a height of 2”.  Seems small, but it’s the perfect height, as the design is complete with two rows together.

Its also available at Urban Elementz: https://www.urbanelementz.com/leisha-s-crosshatch.html  It’s available in paper and digital formats.

I love the texture I can get from a simple design.  These are quilted with A&E 30 tex Perma Core thread in the Antique Cream.  I also used 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline out of Ogden Utah.

Spring has definitely showed up in Utah, we’ve been getting lots of rain.  Which means the grass is getting green and the flowers are starting to bloom.  I love this time of year.  Now, we just need more sunshine.

I hope you have some fun quilting to do this week.  Thanks for taking the time to see what I’m up to.  Have a great week!

Client Quilts & Pillows

Good morning!  Hope you had a great weekend.  This week I’m going to share with you a couple of quilts and then 4 pillow fronts, that I had the pleasure of quilting.  This post has lots of pictures, tons of info, videos, and links.  I’m just trying to share with you all my tips and tricks.  I hope you find them useful.

First up, Beth’s quilt!

This quilt is amazing, and huge.  So big, that I couldn’t get it all in the picture.

Beth used the Farmers Wife book to makes all these blocks.  Such a labor of love!!  She used all Bonnie and Camille fabrics from Moda.  Which is my favorite!!

I sent Beth some options for quilting, and she chose Orange Peel.  This design is by Marci Gore from Lily Street Quilts.  Go here to check out her design: https://www.intelligentquilting.com/Orange-Peel-E2E-p/mg-orangepeele2e.htm

In the video above I share how I line up digital designs, using my Gammill Statler.

I love the orange peel design on this quilt, it compliments the blocks, instead of competing with them.

I used a white 30 tex Perma Core A&E thread and my favorite Winline 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

Loving this angled picture...and the texture on the minky backing below.

Next up...This incredibly fun quilt made by Joleen.

This pattern is by Angie Peterson, who is in Joleen’s quilt guild.

Joleen requested that I quilt her quilt, like Angie’s was quilted.  Bubbles chaining throughout, with stippling in the background to make the bubbles pop.  I think it turned out fun!!  I also did some light quilting here and there in some of the appliqués, so they lay flat.

I used my 4” Circle2™ (Circle Squared) machine quilting circle ruler, to quilt the petals in the windmill blocks, as pictured to the right of the letter Z.  My rulers are available here:  https://www.quiltingit.com/shop?category=Rulers

This is the first of 4 different sizes of my Circle2™ rulers, that I used to quilt these client quilts or pillows.

I used a white and black 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread, in the white and black spots.  I also used my favorite 8020 cotton poly blend batting from Winline.  I used an Edge ruler from Linda at thequiltedpinapple.com to quilt the lines in the black squares, and in some of the appliqués.

I’m loving the circles dancing around the quilt!

Next up...  Sherry made these 4 super cute pillows.  My Girlfriends Quilt Shoppe, located here in Logan Utah, has a monthly pillow club.  They are providing the patterns and fabrics.  If you’d like to join, give them a call...435-213-3229  I’m not sure the cost or if they still have these available, but I’m sure they can help you out!

How cute is this apple?!?!?!!!!  First the ruler fabric print on the background, love it!!

I wanted to have fun with the textures on this, something soft and curvy in the background with the pinstripe grid...that’s my kind of texture complimenting each other.  I used a Edge ruler from Linda at thequiltedpinapple.com to quilt the lines.  Her straight rulers are my favorite!   I also did my favorite overlapping circle design in the background.  I did a video a little while ago on how I freehand this design.  Check it out here, if you haven’t seen it yet.

Overlapping circles is such a fun design to quilt...give it a try!

I used a white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread and Sherry provided a 8020 batting on all the pillows.  I do want to point out how nicely the white thread blends on each of these colors.  It doesn’t distract from the pillow, and you can see the texture.

This snow pillow was fun to quilt!

I wanted to do a variety of lines in the background of the blocks, rulered lines and crackle.  Crackle is a great design to freehand.  It’s forgiving, easy, and a great design to quilt in the background when the shapes are hard to figure out what to quilt.

Here is a quick video on how to do a freehand crackle.  (Note: I have a soft voice, if you’re having a hard time hearing me please try using a speaker of some kind.)

I used Linda’s Edge ruler again!!  Seriously a great tool to have in your quilting studio!

For the bow tie blocks along the edge of the pillow, I used my 3” Circle2™ (Circle Squared) machine quilting circle ruler, to quilt the curves.  These rulers fit so nicely in my hand, and are super fun to quilt with because of how easily I can move them around as I quilt.  They are available here: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop?category=Rulers

To see a video of me using one of my rulers to quilt a continuous orange peel design, click here: https://youtu.be/GWyDTymyzoE

I used white 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread.  This thread is my favorite.  Why?  It’s thick, I get nice stitches and it doesn’t break, like the thinner threads do on me.  My machine just loves it!!

How cute are these leaves?!?!

I wanted to leaves to pop, so I decided on a circle and swirl background.  This is a fun background filler to freehand quilt.  I have another video here, you’d just need to add some swirls inside some of the bigger circles:  https://youtu.be/-NNbKsFFYPg

I used the same white 30 Tex A&E Perma Core thread.  Once again, look how nicely the white blends on the vibrant colors.

I used my 2” Circle2™ ruler to quilt the curves in two of the leaves.  My rulers are available here: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop?category=Rulers

I used Linda’s Edge on this and the orange leaf.  I just love this pop of red!

Lastly, my favorite pillow!  Those bunnies, so cute!!  Gets me more excited for spring to be here.

If you’ve followed along with my quilting for awhile, you may have noticed that I love to mix the curves with the hard lines.  That’s what makes my quilty heart happy, and I think the combination is just beautiful.

I used the Same white thread, and Edge ruler from Linda to get those lines.  Angled, pinstripes, and horizontal...lines are a great way to quilt something that you are quite sure how to quilt.

My last of the 4 different rulers used in my Circle2™ set, is the 7” circle.  It’s how I got those beautiful curves in the border.  To figure out which ruler works best, I first divide up the border or sashing in 2 or 3 sections...then I try out a few rulers to see what is going to give me the best curve.  I just hold the ruler up to the markings.  You’ll see the curves cross, it creates that beautiful shape.  I don’t want to be too close to the seams, but yet I want there to be a good space between the curves.  If you’re interested in me doing a video on auditioning rulers for a design like this, let me know in the comments.  My rulers are available here: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop?category=Rulers

I do want to point out, there are two sizes of circles in each of my Circle2™ rulers, which is why I named them Circle Squared.

If I’m quilting several things the same size, then I like to sew the backings together.  Pin on one backing, the best!!  I quilt one, roll the backing ...baste on the next one, quilt...roll...repeat...until complete.  Haha!  Seriously though, so slick.

Here is a look at my set of clear rulers, for more info on these rulers go here:  https://www.quiltingit.com/blog/2018/10/10/introducing-my-circle2-longarm-circle-ruler-set

My rulers are available in green and clear, 1/4” high quality acrylic.  Check them out here: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop?category=Rulers

There are 1/2” measurements along the edges.  Pictured below is the green set.

I mentioned these rulers quite a bit this post, because I wanted to share with you the need and versatility for each of the sizes in this set.  If you’re a longarm or domestic machine quilter, this set will be a great asset to your quilting.  You never know the size of curve that you’ll need.  With 12 different sizes of circles, ranging from 2” to 13”, the possibilities are endless.  If you kept track, then you know I used the 2”, 3”, 4”, and 7” circles.  I get asked a lot about the difference between the clear and green, the only difference is the color.  The green set is a little easier to see the lines on the ruler, when quilting on lighter fabrics.  If you’re used to using clear ruler, the clear set may be a great option for you.  Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for following along.  Have a great week!  - Leisha

Quilting Tips for Lining Up Digital Designs!

I’ve had some questions lately on how I line up designs, as I advance or roll the quilt.  If you use something different, that won’t let you change the design, play with it and figure out how to tweak it.  I’m using Edge to Edge mode, in CS7 by Gammill Statler.  I also use place two pins on every quilt, so I can get a left and right reference point.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  Happy weekend!

More pictures and info about this quilt will be coming in my next blog post.  The design I’m using is by Marci Gore from Lily Street Designs, and the quilt was made by Beth.

Client Quilts - April

Happy Spring!!  If you’ve had winter the last 6ish months, like we have, I hope spring is on its way for you!!

I hope you’re enjoying having a variety of quilts to look at in one post.  It’s definitely easier for me to share all the amazing quilts that I get to quilt, in one post.  Thank you for being here!

This first quilt was started by Jessica years ago, I taught her how to make a quilt when she was in junior high...and then she wanted to start her next quilt.  So she picked out a couple of blocks from the book: Marsha McCloskey’s Block Party book.  It’s such an awesome book.  There are a variety of different block patterns, and all the blocks are the same size, which makes mixing and matching easy.  It’s an older book, so it may be out of print.  But I did find one for sell on amazon... https://www.amazon.com/Marsha-McCloskeys-Block-Party-Extravaganza/dp/1579542662/ref=mp_s_a_1_fkmrnull_1?crid=2UTFJI90XBG65&keywords=marsha+mccloskey+block+party&qid=1554150636&s=gateway&sprefix=marsha+mc&sr=8-1-fkmrnull

As the years went by, here and there Jessica would remind me that she wanted to work on her quilt.  Unfortunately we never got together to work on it again.  When Jessica got married, her mother in law...who is an amazing quilter, said she was going to finish it for her.

Marla finished it...isn’t it beautiful?!?!?!!  I was lucky enough to quilt it!  I know Jessica is going to be thrilled!!

I used my favorite 30 tex Perma Core cream thread, Dyed Natural, from A&E.  I also used Winline’s 8020 cotton/poly blend batting.

These fabrics used to be available at my mom and aunts fabric shop www.sistersandquilters.com or www.sistersandquilters.etsy.com but unfortunately, that was awhile ago.  They do have a pretty fabulous selection of fabrics...patterns...and notions, you should totally check them out.

I sent Marla a few options for quilting...all feathers, that Patricia Ritter and I have designed.  To check out our designs go to: https://www.urbanelementz.com/catalogsearch/result/?cat=0&q=Leisha+farnsworth

Marla chose our Vintage©️ design and I think it’s a beautiful match!!  Vintage is available at Urban Elementz in paper and several different digital formats.  Go to: https://www.urbanelementz.com/vintage.html

Here is a look at the beautiful cream Cuddle or minky, from Shannon Fabrics.  It comes in 90” wide...which is wonderful!  Makes quilting all those big quilts easier for me.   plus it only comes in the solid, which is great!!  The quilting becomes the texture on the minky.

Next up...  Jenn made this for her daughter who just made cheer for her second year, at our local high school.

This quilt will be the perfect size for her to take on all those bus trips.  If I remember right, the squares were cut 6”, which makes them 5.5” sewn.

I used a silver thread from signature, that looks like it has a little metallic to it.  It doesn’t...just looked like it does.  I have used a metallic thread before, and it quilted great. It was years ago, but I think it was a Superior or Signature thread.  I also used Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

Jenn picked 90” wide minky too, which changed the way that the quilt was pinned on.  I always pin minky on my machine, on the two ends that are cut.  Otherwise stretching happens.  So, I gave Jenn a handful of options, some of which would end up looking like they were quilted vertically.  That was the case with this Mod Dotz design by Patricia Ritter.  It’s available at Urban Elementz:  https://www.urbanelementz.com/mod-dotz.html  I think it turned out great!!  I love the vertical look of the design.

Look at that minky/quilty texture!!!  Love it!

The next two quilts were made by Kristen!

This first quilt is a pattern by Elizabeth Hartman called Dogs in Sweaters.  How cute!!!  Those glasses are a fun touch.

I used the same 30 tex A&E Perma Core thread in Dyed Natural, that I used on Marla’s quilt.  I also used Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.  It’s my favorite cotton poly blend because it’s a little thicker than the others, and it’s so much softer.

I asked Kristen if it would be okay to use my new Double Squared©️ quilting design, she said yes!!  I love how it turned out.

Double Squared is available on my website:  https://www.quiltingit.com/shop/double-squared or Urban Elementz website: https://www.urbanelementz.com/double-squared.html  If I remember right, I quilted this one at a height around 5.5”.  Double Squared is a new take on my Squared design, that quilts out on point.  I think it’s fun to have both options, and I hope you enjoy quilting with this one, too!

This is such a fun quilt!!  I know several people who’d love one.

Kristen’s Grandma’s Flower Garden quilt!

If you’ve been following along on my Instagram for awhile, then you know I’m making a hexie flower quilt.  I started it nearly 4 years ago.  It’s sewn by hand using the English Paper Piecing method.  It’s definitely a labor of love, and I’ve enjoyed making mine.  I still have edges to make, but I’m ready to lay mine out...so excited, especially now that I know how to quilt it.  One of the reasons that I was okay with mine taking me so long, is because I had no idea how to quilt it.  Until now!!  I searched Pinterest and Instagram, and couldn’t find anything that wasn’t either too time consuming or I liked.  Then I thought of my digital cross hatching design, On Point.

I used the same cream Dyed Natural A&E Perma Core 30 tex thread, and Winline’s 8020 cotton poly blend batting.

I’m loving all these floral prints!!!

On Point©️ Is available in my shop at: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop/on-point or at Urban Elementz: https://www.urbanelementz.com/leisha-s-on-point.html  The great thing about this design, if you offset it at 50% on every other row, then no lines quilt over other lines.  It’s clean and beautiful.

I love the mixture of colors and florals on this quilt!!!  The squares ended up 3/4” big.  Tiny and sweet, if you ask me.

Close ups and a nice angled picture!

Here is a look at the backing.  I love lines and squares, to me this is a perfect fit.  Now, I can wait to get mine sewn together, so I can quilt it the same way.

I quilt on a 22” Gammill Statler.  I only use the computer on edge to edge designs.  When I custom quilt, it’s all me and some rulers.  I hope you have a great week!!  I have some fun things to quilt this week.

Take care, happy quilting!!   - Leisha
