Lisa’s Summer Nine Patch Quilt

As a longarm quilter, there are so many quilts that I quilt and then want to make, and this one is at the top of my list! I love it even more so because of all the navy, which is one of my favorite colors.

As you can see from the picture below, while the quilt was on my longarm, there is Minky on the back. So we talked about several different panto designs, because I didn’t want the minky to lose its coziness with too dense of a panto.

Kris’s Ocean Currents Quilt

I have a fun quilt to share with you today!!!

When I saw this quilt I immediately wanted to use one of Melissa from Sew Shabby Quilting new pantos that I had seen recently. There are so many cute new ones. I took a screenshot of the Maple panto and sent it to Nancy, and she agreed!! Yay! So I purchased it and started quilting. It turned out amazing, as you can see. Miriam’s Twilight Gardens Quilt

So excited to share with you Miriam’s Twilight Gardens quilt, which is by Pamela Curo, and was featured in Quiltmania Magazine. The pattern isn’t available in her Etsy shop, it must be exclusive to the magazine.

Miriam asked for custom quilting and said there wasn’t anything she didn’t like. Which gives me creative freedom to quilt a variety of different designs throughout the quilt.

With the background shapes in the blocks, I was able to create some beautiful textures like the 1/2” lines going around the shape of the background in the block above and the diamonds in the background below. While both of these blocks have a lot of lines, they also have some curves as well which I created using my Circle2 rulers. More about them in a moment.

When I started quilting this filler strip I was thinking of just quilting elongated x’s, but then had the idea after I created a zig zag to echo the zig zag with a 1/2” line on both sides. I’m more excited about the end result than I usually am with filler blocks or strips. I love this texture.

I knew I wanted to do I pinstripe border, and decided to go small because the borders weren’t exactly even and I thought I could fudge it if needed. It ended up working so good. I was quilting up to the first corner when I decided to add 4 pointed stars in each of the corners to add more stars to the quilt because of the star block. I love to pull inspiration from the blocks in the quilt or from the fabric, for the quilting. The inner border stumped me for a little bit because I was trying to figure out something to contrast the pinstripes. I almost did ribbon candy, but had already quilted that design in a few filler blocks that touched or was near the border. I love the diamond shape. I did mark a dot every two inches with a chalk pencil to make it easier.

I decided to do my pebble and pebble swirls in the stars m, which adds softness to the block and helps the stars pop. I love love love how these stars turned out!! Initially I wasn’t going to quilt much in them, starting with just a simple x, but then I quilted a couple of pinstripes…and I couldn’t love them more!! They remind me of the folded paper stars we used to make with notes in school.

One of my very favorite fillers to freehand quilt is my Overlapping Circles. It’s beautiful with a variety of different patterns or appliqué. It’s the perfect design to get around the little spots between leaves or flowers. I can show you the fundamental of this design and others in my Quilting It Freemotion course. Another fun design for me, were these scrappy log cabin blocks (not sure what their official name is). I initially just planned on quilting angle lines from the outside into the center, but then quickly realized the center part is more square so it was another opportunity to add more 4 pointed stars. I really love repeating the same design throughout a quilt in different blocks to make the quilt cohesive overall.

I feel so lucky that Linda’s husband Scott is my Circle2 ruler manufacturer. He has been the greatest person I’ve worked with in the quilting industry.

I love love love this block. The simple lines and curves, create such beautiful textures!!!

More blocks with curves and lines. I love the 1/4” pinstripes around the block in the black background in the block above as well as the angled lines in the block below. I used my 2”, 3”, and 4” Circle2 rulers for the curves in these blocks.

I quilted simple swirls and x’s in the square filler blocks. It’s fun to create a little texture in blocks that may typically be forgotten. They deserve a little attention, too.

I final look at one of the stars in the borders. It’s all about the details. If you need to scroll up and checkout the full quilt again. But first…

Below are my 2”, 3”, and 4” Circle2 rulers that are available in my shop. They also include the 8”, 9”, and 10” circles in the set, because there are two different sizes of circles per ruler. Shirlene’s Jelly Strip Quilt

Angie’s Teddy Bear Baby Quilt

I have a darling baby boy quilt to share with you today!! Angie made this for her daughter’s best friend. So sweet!

I searched for a pattern and couldn’t find one. The bears and bow ties are appliquéd on.

Because the bears are appliquéd, Angie wanted some custom quilting. The back is also a thick minky, so I wanted to be careful not to quilt it too densely.

I decided on a grid in the background to line up with the squares in the sashing. Which I felt would enhance the bears but not be too dense.

To make the square sashing stand out and change up the quilting, I decided to treat them as four patches and quilt an x in them.

For all of the lines I used Edge rulers from Linda at The Quilted Pineapple. Go to: https://www.thequiltedpineapple.com/shop/

I quilted around each bear and the in the bow ties, to help them pop. The bears are only about 4” to 5” tall.

I quilted a freehand squiggle line in the inner border and decided to do a 1/4” pinstripe in the outer border. I love love love the combination of all the lines!!

Heidi’s Grandma’s Flower Garden Quilt

Sooo excited to share Heidi’s Grandma’s Flower Garden quilt with you! When I saw this beautiful quilt I was in awe and hoped that Heidi would let me quilt it for her.

There are different ways to sew a Grandma’s Flower Garden quilt together. Some are just hexagons, and some have other pieces like the one Heidi made. She used diamonds and little triangles to frame the hexie flowers. This is a vintage pattern so you’ll have to Google different tutorials or videos to learn how to make one.

One of the amazing things about Heidi‘s quilt, is that she fussy cut a lot of the pieces which creates an incredible overall design.

I sent Heidi a few options that I had drawn up on graph paper, and then we talked over the phone to finalize what she liked. She wanted classic custom quilting to focus on each of the pieces. Instead of an edge to edge design that wouldn’t quite lineup on the hexies.

I quilted a vertical x in each of the hexies and a double looped diamond on the diamond pieces with an arc in the mini triangles. Heidi had never used bamboo batting and wanted to give it a try, so glad she did. The drape is beautiful!! I used Winline Textiles 4 oz bamboo, they also have a 6 oz bamboo which I also carry. My favorite battings!!

Heidi straightened up the edges of her hexies and added borders to help secure the edge, which is a great idea!

Isobel’s Disappearing Pinwheel Quilt

Are you looking for a fun quilt pattern that’s a twist on a classic simple block??? You’re in the right place.

Isobel made this beautiful Disappearing Pinwheel quilt. After googling it to find the pattern, I was assuming that Jenny from Missouri Star would have a blog post or video about it. It turns out she had several videos, one video for each block. But then I came across this other video that has 10 different variations of the disappearing pinwheel block. You’ll have to look on Missouri Stars YouTube channel if you would like to see Jenni‘s videos or do a google search. The video below has quite a few if not all of the blocks that Isobel used. Isobel’s blocks are bigger than the one in the video linked below. For bigger blocks start with 8” or 9” squares.

Louise’s Christmas Serenade quilt

It’s that time of year when it’s time to start making your next Christmas quilt if you haven’t already started. This one is darling, made by Louise.

I searched high and low for a link to the pattern, which is called Christmas Serenade. Possibility from a Beginning Quilting series or book. I couldn’t find anything other than a short video on Instagram of someone having a quilt kit sent to them from a store in Arizona. But no pattern was listed. If you can find a flying geese pin wheel block, you might be in luck. Every other square is the background fabric, and finish it off with a scrappy square border. Louise wanted to try the 4 oz bamboo batting that I carry. It’s from Winline Textiles, and has the best drape and it’s sooo soft. It’s eco-friendly and does cost a little more than the 8020, but not much.

The backing is a cozy white minky, which coupled with the bamboo batting its extra soft.

Look at the quilty texture on the backing, too!! This is why I love solid minky!!

Before summer officially ends…school starts tomorrow, so it kind of feels like it’s over, I want to share Louise’s Summer Row quilt. That’s not an official pattern name because she used blocks from multiple patterns and made this darling quilt. I’ll do my best to link the different patterns to each of the blocks below.

Louise’s July’s Quilty Pillow…runner

Happy July!!!

I was hoping to share this sooner, but I think there is still plenty of time to make this darling runner and enjoy it this summer.

The pattern has an outer border, so if you decide to make a runner, note that you won’t have to add the outer side sashings to the center block.

Sherry’s Sweet Strawberry Quilt

Excited to share this darling strawberry quilt that Sherry made for her granddaughter. I have oodles and oodles of pictures and links to everything I used.

When I first saw this quilt and Sherry really wanted it custom quilted, I knew that I wanted to quilt my Overlapping Circles in the background. It’s a fun design to quilt and it allows me to stop and quilt the strawberries as I come to each one. Continuous custom quilting is so much more efficient. Plus that quilty texture is soooo good. In the strawberries I quilted a variety of different variations of lines, so no two strawberries are the same. I’ve done this on other quilts and it turns out beautifully because the overall design is cohesive. For all the lines I used my favorite Edge rulers from Linda at The Quilted Pineapple. Diagonal lines with different spacing or a grid with varying lines. Some are simple, while others took me a little longer to quilt.

It’s fun to see how the 8020 batting from Winline Textiles amplifies the quilted texture. Like the strawberry in the bottom left of the picture below. I quilted seven 1/4” lines together and then left a 3/4” space between the next set of lines. That 3/4” stripe pops because of the density of the group of seven 1/4” lines.

I even added a couple of wavy lined strawberries, because why not!

Simple 1/2” horizontal lines even create beautiful texture.

Hope you trim and zoom in to see the lines closer up.

I loved how the strawberries turned out, and here are a few of my favorites.

Four simple 1/4” lines with an inch space and going both ways creates a beautiful grid.

Simple 1/4” pinstripes are a favorite of mine, but adding different spaces, like the 1/2” between two pinstripes and the one inch space between those lines, creates the sleek stripe design above.

This is the close up on the strawberry with seven 1/4” lines. I love it!!

I couldn’t be more thrilled with how it turned out. 🍓🥰

Sometimes I have a clear vision of what to do on the blocks and background when I’m custom quilting, and then I can get stumped on a border. Which was the case with this one. The shape of the blocks isn’t something I’ve quilted before. So I measured the block itself and then sketched it in graph paper. Then I start filling in the shape with different curves or lines, and this is what I came up with. I added the freehand scallop after seeing the unquilted space above the arc. It creates an almost lace like design. Which adds a perfect texture to the edge of the quilt, which frames it beautifully. Are you interested in watching me quilt a block. I used my 4”/10” Circle2 ruler to quilt the curves, which are available in a set of 6 in my shop. The ruler sizes range from 2” to 13”. They are made from 1/4” high quality acrylic in the USA. Go to: https://www.quiltingit.com/shop the green 4”/10” is pictured above. Green helps you see the lines on the ruler better, especially on light or white fabrics. The clear ones are great, too. Just a matter of preference, really.

You’ll see above the border design along the top edge of the quilt.

I quilted freehand scalloped leaves with a swirl inside and I quilted in the ditch around the leaves. The stems got 1/2” 45° lines.

I echoed a few curves in the petals of the white blossoms and a few circles in the center. There is also a look at a few border blocks along the right edge of the quilt.

The quilty texture on this one was so fun to create. Quilting really adds depth and personality to quilts.

Isobel’s Happy Little Spools Quilt

Isobel had the idea to do variegated thread. So I checked the different colors of Omni-V that I have and chose the color Zumba #9044. It has green, yellow, purple, and reddish orange in it. Which looks fun on the ombré layout of the quilt. Barbara’s Rail Fence Quilt

Are you looking for a scrappy quilt??? This one that Barbara made could be it!

Barbara told me the name is Rail Fence, but I wasn’t able to find a pattern. She saw the quilt and just made it. If you know of a pattern, please let me know and I will share it here.

If you look at the block it’s four strips sewn together to form a square, then the square is cut diagonally from point to point. Then it’s mixed up with other triangle blocks and sewn together. Barbara added sashing, which also makes it easier when sewing the quilt together to avoid having to line up all the strips on an angle. To ensure that your quilt lays flat and doesn’t have a lot of fullness, make sure you trim down your blocks to the same size and then measure and trim your sashing pieces before they are sewn on. Making that extra effort makes all the difference in a quilt that is pieced on the bias.
